Is it Snobby? - 2006/11/11 21:24 On Tuesday, I will be auditioning for my school's production of Beauty and the Beast. I really want to be in it, but I'm also in Les Mis, which will be at it's height of rehearsals in the next two months. Is it snobby to say that if I don't get a principal part that I don't want to be in it? I'm afraid that people are taking it that way, but it's not like that at all. I like to give 110% to the productions I'm in, and the schedules are already close to seriously clashing. i don't think I'll be able to give my all to both productions, and if it comes down to a choice, I'd coose Les Mis, hands down. The people actually want the be there.
Will the director think I'm a huge snob if I say no to an ensemble part?
Auditioning for: Brigadoon, theatre season, American Music Theatre, Into the Woods, Sound of Music, and AMDA.

Re:Is it Snobby? - 2006/11/11 22:09 If they do think you're a snob, will it matter that much since you won't be in it anyway?

I don't think anyone should have a problem with it as long as you a) make your feelings clear from the beginning but b) don't talk about it too much.

If you try too hard to explain it to people it may come off as self indulgent. Tell only those who really need to know (the audition panel) and be short and sweet about it. People turn down ensemble parts all the time. It's not like you would be the first to back out - but I would tell them at the audition that you will not be accepting a chorus role so that you don't waste their time replacing you when you turn it down later.

I think it becomes snobbery when someone goes around telling everyone who will listen that they won't be accepting a chorus role. Why do all these people need to know? Keep it private and do what you have to do.

Re:Is it Snobby? - 2006/11/11 22:16 Well, to me it does matter if they think I'm a snob. It's taken me years to stop giving that first impression (not just in theatre situations, but everywhere... I think it was to hide my shyness). I don't want to hav people think of me as a snob again.

I've only divulged my views to three people- my mom, my sister (who is also auditioning), and my voice teacher. I made it pretty clear on my audition form that I'm in Les Mis and it's very important that I be at those rehearsals as well. I don't even expect to get in, but I don't want to cause any more trouble than I have to.

Re:Is it Snobby? - 2006/11/23 19:48 You shouldn't tell people why you turned down the role (if you just get an ensemble part). If anyone asks you can just say you thought you would have time to do two plays but you didn't. If you get a major role, then no one has to know anything about your plans to turn down the enseble part.

Furthermore, if you're any good, and I mean *any good*, people thinking you're a snob is something you're going to have to get used to. Especially if you ever win an acting award. Get ready for people to stop talking to you and spreading rumours about you. Drama club and local theatres are usually terrible for rumours and hatred. I'm not exaggerating at all. This is from my experience.

Re:Is it Snobby? - 2006/12/27 19:45 I think that most people in theater will understand. many actors audition for several shows at a time, and often have to turn down one show in order to commit to another.
