Click here to see the profile of this user 		Victorian Hairstyles - 2007/12/14 01:28 Does anyone have any suggestions regarding Victorian hairstyles? I'm just about to open a production of "A Christmas Carol" (in about 9 hours) and we haven't been given any real information regarding hair or makeup. I've been looking on the internet but I haven't found anything helpful, everything is way too complex for me. I'm sure there are tons of people on this site who have done this show so hopefully one of y'all can help me. For now I'm just wearing it half up/hal down curly which I know is a little too casual for the 1840s but it's what most of the cast is doing. Also, or mkeup I'm not sure what color to use. I'm naturally fair and my every day foundation is just the teensiest bit darker than my real skin tone but I'm afraid my stage foundation is too dark for the period so which do y'all think I should wear? -Georgia

Anyway...Jekyll & Hyde has a victorian setting, though it's 1890, but my hair (wig) was half up and half down. Same for Lucy. The other upper class cast members had their hair up in a bun.

In a lot of the Christmas Carol movies they have the front part up and the rest is in those big ringlets. Here's a link to a decent looking victorian style bun (wig): link

As for make-up I would try to go as natural as possible. I have always used natural tones for period pieces and I always use my normal foundation. I usually use an ivory foundation and I've never had a director complain that I wasn't dark enough.

Anyway, the Gibson girl style (which is the wig Annie showed to you) is a little bit too late in the century for Christmas Carol.
Half up and great big sausage curls will work just fine. They also wore a sort of "dog ear" style where most of the hair was up except for sections in the front on either side of your head. This was put into ringlets as well.
If you have on a bonnet (as was the style), your hair won't be a huge deal. As long as you have some sausage curls showing, it's all good!

As far as makeup goes... is your character upper or lower class? The richer one is at that time, the paler one is.

I've ended up just wearing my hair half up half down curly except for a couple of show when I ran out of time and just did a french twist. As for makeup I'm just going pretty natural, which means pale cuz I am so obviously Scotch-Irish. -Georgia
