Well, I don't know who you are auditioning for, or what your director wants, but here's how my director looked at the characters:
Lucy: yearns for a way out of her surroundings. Think Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, but not as funny. Mezzo with a strong belt and a nice mix. She also described her as having one foot on the gas, one on the brake; despair with hope, tough as nails. She shouldn't sound as pretty vocally as Emma. She should have a darker timbre.
Emma: Jekyll's aristocratic fiancee, who believes in him fiercely and, in her own way, rejects the rules of her social class. Think Belle in Beauty and the Beast. Lyrical soprano with guts in the lower range. My director wanted her feisty and strong. I used my belt and mixed voice for a lot of the songs, however I did not belt at all during "Once Upon a Dream," because I didn't want to over sing it. My director is really picky (she's worked professionally as an actress and director) and she actually gave me a perfect on it during rehearsal.
I don't have any advice in particular because every director and actor approaches roles differently. We sang songs from the show and didn't do any reading, so we had to do all of our acting while singing "Someone Like You." If I had had to pick out an audition song I probably would have used "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from Jesus Christ Superstar for Lucy because I can belt it and act it. I also think it's really fitting for her character. For Emma I would probably have used "Unexpected Song" from Song and Dance (aka Tell Me on a Sunday). Even though the lyrics don't really work for her, the range (at least 2 octaves) does.
Good luck with your audition!
