Re:Practical Jokes - 2007/10/22 08:59 One year I was assistant directing an high school production of Bye Bye Birdie. I just so happened that year my younger sister was in the cast playing Mrs. Peterson. Well the woman who built a large portion of our set and helped backstage told us she was going to play a joke on my sister. So one night, we get to the scene where Mrs. Peterson says that she is going to kill herself by sticking her head in an oven. My sister goes to stick her head in the oven, is about half way in and she sees a real fire in there. (Well actually one of those lights with the air that blows to make it look real.) She stumbled so quickly out of that oven you would have thought she was really on fire. Haha it was pretty funny, but you probably had to be there to get the full extent of the funniness.

Re:Practical Jokes - 2007/10/22 11:10 during tech week for sleepy hollow, our main character (Ichabod) jumped into the dressing room and screamed, which startled us. minutes before, he had told my friend that his biggest fear is spiders. So during a scene we were supposed to be whispering 'Ichabod...haunted....the bridge" and stuff like that. Well we threw a few "spiders...." in there, and the look on his face was entertaining. i have way better ones, but for some reason i can't think of them.

Re:Practical Jokes - 2007/10/23 19:38 Back in high school: during the curtain call of our last show of Noises Off a cast member busted THROUGH the wall of the set, tearing the window sill off with him. He took his bow and flung the window sill which hit me right in the head. The whole audience gasped - I was fine, but he got in HUGE trouble. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re:Practical Jokes - 2007/10/26 15:51 I have a few:

When I was Miss Hannigan in "Annie Jr.", different orphans were supposed to pop up in random locations to scare me during 'Little Girls'. At one point, I was supposed to open a trunk to throw a doll in it and a girl would pop up and yell "BOO!" One night during dress rehearsal, and went to open the trunk, and instead of the little girl who I was expecting, the boy who played Drake popped up in a Halloween mask. I attempted to hide my surprise, but everyone cracked up (including the director) and I lost it.

In "Into the Woods Jr." this summer, we hid one of those squishy balls from Claires that's full of eyeballs in the shoe that the stepsisters had to try on on closing night. The look on both of the sisters' faces was priceless.

When I was Mary in "The Secret Garden", the dreamers would walk by me during "Storm II" and I was supposed to look scared. They all decided one night to make faces at me as they walked by. I had the hardest time not laughing at their faces, but I was able to keep my composure.

Re:Practical Jokes - 2008/01/14 02:22 In "Into the woods Jr." (i wasn't in it but i knew the whole cast) on the closing night for the bows, when the baker and the baker's wife came out they had 5 other kids with them, it was hilarious! When i was 11 or 12 i was King Louie in Jungle Book kids and on the closing night on bows i threw my head piece(it was made of soft red fuzzy material)in the audience and with out even aiming it, it hit the director in the face! LOL! At least i didn't throw something hard! -Laura

Re:Practical Jokes - 2008/01/14 13:02 Heh. When I was playing Count Rugen in The Princess Bride, I got into character by remaining stony faced and stoic backstage, so, naturally, a bunch of cast members took it upon themselves to try and make me break. It was usually backstage so it wasn't generally that big of a deal, but during the scene where I'm torturing Wesley, I looked up at the tech booth and the techs running the sound board were wearing big paper bags on their heads that had jack o' lantern faces cut into them and were waving their arms around wildly. Closest I've ever come to cracking. It was totally unexpected and I smacked them around afterward but good.

When I played Thenardier, during the song "Dog Eats Dog" when ValJean drags Marius into the sewer then passes out, I come in and start robbing corpses and finishing a few survivors off so I can steal from them as well. One night, when I got to Marius to steal his ring, his eyes popped wide open and he stared at me with this really dopey shocked expression on his face. The way he was laying, there was no way the audience could tell what he was doing, so I had to bite back a chuckle and made sure to pop his finger a bit while I pulled off his ring. It was really funny, and we laughed about it after the scene was over.

Ever since 'It's A Wonderful Life', we've tried to incorporate buffalo gals into every show, so when there was an awkward silence and someone missed their cue, I just started humming it and waltzing around the set (my character was all alone and someone comes in and surprises her) and the director about died laughing while I examined random set peices. That was an interesting tech rehearsal.

Re:Practical Jokes - 2008/01/19 04:07 I just thought of one! It wasn't a joke but it sure was funny at the moment! In Fiddler on the Roof Jr.(again i wasn't in it, i just knew pretty much the whole cast) during the scene were Tevye's wife breaks the news that (i think it was the third daughter) married outside of their religion (i think that was the news, but i was 11 at the time and uncapable of understanding everything) anyways, their was this long emotional pause before Tevye answered... and then the sound of the toilet flushing was heard because the bathroom is next to the stage!!!!!! LOL The director was really upset! but it was hilarious! (my friend and i discovered if someone has the sink running you can hear it if you put ur ear on the wall, you can also hear someone knocking) we have alot of free time at rehearsals! lol
I just thought of another one! To get us to smile on stage the stage managers do hilarious things, like make funny faces or dance around! lol

Re:Practical Jokes - 2008/03/07 14:12 In the most recent production I was in, there were I think a total of 15 performances. One scene, there is a knock on the door and the Cinderella opens it to get an invitation from a messenger. The guy that plays the messengers is at least 6'3". The second to last performance, he decided to be on his knees so he would appear A LOT shorter than he really was. It really took Cinderella by surprise.
