Idina Menzel (Elphaba) gasping between every line? - 2007/07/23 10:06 I was listening to the gorgeous, talented Idina Menzel sing Defying Gravity live on YouTube yesterday. I love her to death, but I noticed that inbetween every line in D.G she gasps. I've heard many reasons as to why. I've heard she has asthma, but my friend can sing it just fine, minus the gasping, and she has asthma. I've also heard she smoked/does smoke. Does anyone have a definite answer? Thanks! Jessica

Re:Idina Menzel (Elphaba) gasping between every line? - 2007/07/23 11:39 I don't know why either. She may not have a good technique, and that's very possible. She might not have had phrasing taught to her when she was younger, so it would be a hard thing to learn when she's older.

It's very obvious on the cast recording. If you listen she goes "everyone deserves the chance to FLY! *GASP*" and she goes on. It sounds almost like a hiccup!

Re:Idina Menzel (Elphaba) gasping between every line? - 2007/07/23 13:02 I've heard a bunch of people say she has asthma...but if it is her technique, she's gotten better...there was a video I was watching of her in the london production . She did "Defying Gravity" and I didn't hear much gasping at all...but you're right, you can definitely hear it on the cast album after 'fly". If you want that video, go to YouTube and type in "Idina Menzel Helen Dallimore Defying Gravity November 8" and it should be the first one...that's her best video in my opinion. Melchi Gabor, he's such a radical!!!

Re:Idina Menzel (Elphaba) gasping between every line? - 2007/07/24 17:49 Maybe that gasp is for dramatic effect. More of a "popy" sound. It is a very dramatic intense moment in the song, so maybe it's supposed to be there.

Re:Idina Menzel (Elphaba) gasping between every line? - 2007/07/24 20:11 This is the tony awards performance you saw, right? I heard that she was really nervous or excited, because it was either before or after she won best actress that night. So that might've been all the breathing. And i'm sure defying gravity is harder to sing live, with the choreography, being hung 15ft in the air, and everything else going on around you. But this is just my guess. *´¨)
