High School Musical - 2006/12/17 05:49I didn't really know where to post this...Oh well...
A local theatre company in my area (Georgia) is doing High School Musical, much like half of the nation and the other 5 places doing it in my area.
I was forced into the audition by my friend Jennifer, who is also the assistant Director of the show. As an AVID hater of the movie, I told her that I did NOT want to audition. She says, "Trust me. It's good."
I decided to suck it up and I auditioned last Saturday. Cast List is posted and they changed Ms. Darbus to MR. Darbus and gave me the role. Of course, I got a little excited because it is a lead. Then I remembered...It's High School Musical...Crap.
A week later and it's the read through...
All I will say is...Anyone who has an opportunity to see/audition for this show...
DO IT!
The play is SO MUCH BETTER than the crapfest that is the movie. The script has been changed, characters added, and most importantly, the SONGS have been changed and arranged so they actually progress plot and show character...instead of randomly singing.
I have a copy of the Reference Recording from MTI if anybody wants a copy...It really is magnificent.
~Thomas~ Could that be long enough? Sorry...

Re:High School Musical - 2006/12/17 20:51I'm not a big fan of the HSM movie...avid hater of it 'cuz people are calling it GREASE 3 which it is SOOOO not. As a GREASE fan I have to say it doesn't even come close to Grease and I find it an insult they're calling it "Grease 3" However I've never seen the play...If it were to come around here where I am I'd like to be Kelsi, the girl who plays the piano, partly because I look like her and partly because I'm a pianist myself, I've been playing for 7 years.Melchi Gabor, he's such a radical!!!

But a lot of the girls (who got leads) used songs from Hairspray.
You should DEFINITELY audition. I HATE HATE HATE HATE the movie...
But the play is just so good!

Well, the music is A LOT like Grease...ESPECIALLY in the musical.
Also, Kelsi has a much larger role in the musical than she does in the movie, much like most of the characters.

Re:High School Musical - 2006/12/17 21:00My friend Caroline was Sandy in Grease this summer and now she is Sharpay in High School Musical. She was glistening a lot because of the similarities. Also, the director of this show is the same one who directed Grease.

The movie is a borderline guilty pleasure for me but it mostly annoys me. I'd be curious to see the play. There's a school in Silver Spring (a town close to me) that's doing it...but I'm apprehensive, honestly.Shelby Jr. Moderator

I wouldn't say less cheesy, but the songs are adapted so they FIT into the play and they progress plot....Not just singing for the sake of singing.
The play version is very inspirational, and while the focus IS on Troy & Gabriella, a lot of the focus is about going for your dreams, no matter who you are.
Like I said, if anybody wants to hear the songs, I have the recording and one of the songs ("Stick To The Status Quo" - which is very different on stage) are on my http://www.myspace.com/dramatic_world/]myspace.

Re:High School Musical - 2006/12/20 18:50I listened to it and I loved the change! It sounded very theatre-esque, although I think Stick to the Status Quo was the most musical of the bunch from the movie.Shelby Jr. Moderator
