Re:Shows in my area - can't decide - 2007/07/12 08:51
The thing about Phantom, though, is that I really dislike Andrew Lloyd Webber. It's gotten to the point that the mere mention of his name makes me want to start ranting, so it was a relief when I saw Xanadu and they were clearly making fun of him at one point in the show (then afterward, I spoke with someone who was friends with a lot of the cast, and he shares my opinion of Webber, which made my day). So I'm just not sure how much I would enjoy POTO. The only reason I actually want to see it is so that I feel justified in criticizing it, really, which I guess wouldn't be for the right reason, would it? I mean, I've already listened to a gazillion different cast albums and have seen the movie (and developed an intense disliking for Emmy Rossum - honestly, I sang like her at my first couple of voice lessons, which is no compliment to myself), and I'm aware of most of the differences that are in the stage show and not in the movie, so I might be justified enough already.
Anyway, here is my new list of things I might see! I have to cross a few off the list, like The Lion King and The Light in the Piazza, because I won't be able to see them (TLK is already out of town, I think, and Piazza is leaving Chicago too soon - I won't be able to go unless I go the weekend that the new HP book is released, and I don't think that would sit well with the people I'd be going with).
As for Candide, I would LOVE to see it (I did see the Kristin Chenoweth version) because I'm an opera fan, too, and it's an opera company that's producing it. Unfortunately, the company is also 4 hours away, and gas prices have gone up a lot in the past week.
I think Aida and Thoroughly Modern Millie are pretty much definites (I loved the opera of Aida and loved the Julie Andrews TMM film). I want to go see DRS, but that all depends on if I can find a way for my underage friends to be allowed to go to Chicago, lol. I know I won't have a problem in getting parental consent, but my friends might.
1.) Dirty Rotten Scoundrels 2.) Aida 3.) Phantom of the Opera (I don't know, though) 4.) My Fair Lady 5.) Jane Eyre 6.) Thoroughly Modern Millie 7.) South Pacific
The ones I'm really very unsure about are Phantom, Jane Eyre, and South Pacific.
