Re:Sweeney Todd trailer is released - 2007/12/24 04:01he's not singing tenor, just a very light baritone. he doesn't seem to go low enough at time though, he sorta growls through it.
its definitively not hearn's booming opera voice, but i think its a more personal style that works on film
on a different note, sweeney is my dream part (im performing epiphany as solo for the show choir i'm in)current/ previous role- Pharoh (joseph) Baker (into the woods),Peter (romeo and juliet), Audrey2 (little shop), Zach (a chorus line), Miles Gloriosus (a funny thing happened on the way to the forum), Sheriff (bat boy), and Macduff (Macbeth) - Dillon

Re:Sweeney Todd trailer is released - 2007/12/24 14:28I saw it Friday afternoon and I loved it (as did my brother and my mom!). There was far less blood than I was expecting, for sure...
The voices sound better when you have the visual to go with them, I think. Bonham-Carter's voice is pretty weak, as was previously stated, but her characterization is incredible. The younger cast were all exceptional.
I think if you go in expecting EXACTLY what the stage version is, you will be disappointed. It's an adaptation in the truest sense and if you mourn all of the differences, you can't focus on the positives of the film (of which there are a lot!). Going back to Helena, the way she played the role would not have called for the way Angela Lansbury sang her songs.
I think I did condition myself with the mediocre voices as I've been following everything about this film closely for a year and a half. I don't care to listen to most of the soundtrack on its own and prefer the original broadway cast recording in that sense, but with the film as a whole it's just fine.
I think I just have to mention the costumes because of who I am, but they're breathtaking if not completely historically accurate. I see another Oscar in Colleen Atwood's future.
Oh, just to share my personal tragedy with everyone I won advanced screening passes to it the Wednesday before it opened and couldn't go because I had dress rehearsal for South Pacific!Kathleen Sera Current Shows: Aloha Pinafore - Volga Upcoming Auditions: Crazy For You - Irene Roth

Re:Sweeney Todd trailer is released - 2007/12/27 16:16hey just a question to those who've seen it. Is it really bloody and scary? some people are saying it is, but I really want to see it...
I've survived another bloody Tim Burton movie, Sleepy Hollow, and only looked away a few times (hehe) but i liked it. Is it any worse than that? *´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•´ Annie

Re:Sweeney Todd trailer is released - 2007/12/27 16:31I'd equate the blood to Kill Bill. Over the top and pretty fake, but a lot of it. I went in expecting much more than I saw, but there is still a lot. It just looks like nail polish It's only in a few parts, and you can cover your eyes (maybe go with someone who's seen it already so they can warn you).
I guess the next question is how old you are and how mature are you for your age? If you're under 18, you'll need someone old enough to go with you. 13-14, is maybe pushing it and that's where the maturity level comes in. I would have had no problem with this at that age, but everyone is different. 16+ should be okay..
There are themes of suggested rape and pedophilia as well, but if you know the stage version already, you knew that. You don't see anything of that nature, but it is implied.Kathleen Sera Current Shows: Aloha Pinafore - Volga Upcoming Auditions: Crazy For You - Irene Roth

i saw the movie today. i thought i might not like it b/c i am not a huge tim burton fan and i am not particularly fond of the movie-musical. to my surprise, i didn't find it overly tim burton-- at least not "freaky" tim burton. it had a hint of Batman filmography-- very dark with a comic book feel. when i heard "bloody" i thought of Godfather bloody. but the blood was totally fake-- maybe tim burton's "tribute" to the satire/comedy/irony of the original musical?? i did find myself throwing up in my mouth a little and chuckling simultaneously (i know... so sadistic re: the chuckling) but i thought that the actors' timing was pretty good throughout. i think maybe if more of the "sinister" songs like the Ballad were not cut, there would be more juxtaposition w/ songs like A Little Priest and By the Sea. i also think HBC could have been a little more over the top in her songs. she was not a terrible singer but she wasn't Mrs. Lovett enough for me. maybe a little too "pretty". i wanted a bigger, stronger voice in the songs but i didn't have a problem with her characterization and i think she did well in the role. i don't have any complaints re: Johnny Depp except i thought maybe he's a little young to be Sweeney? i thought it was a little awkward with SBC being Pirelli but i guess i am just being nit-picky. i especially liked JD during Worst Pies in London. handled what he did sing pretty well. i was pleasantly surprised. actually, none of the singers really made me cringe. i think the orchestrations helped this-- they seemed more karaoke than broadway. as kathleen said, i don't think i will be listening to this soundtrack on its own, but it worked in the movie theatre.
overall, i enjoyed it. surprised myself. i wish alan rickman had more screen time...... beadle bamford was a creep and i didn't mind his death. toby was a little too cute at times but i loved he was a lush Anthony and Johanna did justice to their roles for the most part. i wish there was more substance to the beggar woman but i guess you can't put everything in the movie-- it was almost 2hrs as it was. i thought the costumes and the makeup were excellent.

Re:Sweeney Todd trailer is released - 2007/12/27 22:36hm. i think that generally, when a movie-musical is made, its hard for people who are really knowledgable of theatre and stage versions to enjoy it without sitting down and comapring the entire time! I think that for the most part, movies and musicals are two mediums that are really hard to mix. When a musical is converted to a film, they do the best that they can with what they have to work with... it's also targeted to a really different audience, and well most people do not have the insight we have on musicals!!
I think Johnny Depp was good for the part. He was commercial, and acted well. Singing-wise, his voice for sure was limited, but i kind of liked how his voice sounded very gritty and unpolished. I know it's an operetta, but a perfectly trained voice probably would not go over as well with the average person, they just wouldnt like... get it. movie producers want to sell those seats! lol but well the way JD interpreted it still worked. for me, anyways!
Helena so-and-so lol ... eh. her voice was too thin and strained and floaty, and this did work, however, for harmonizing with sweeney. i did like her acting though. it was a different, original take on Ms. Lovett. it's better than a carbon-copy of Angela Lansbury's take, right?
Alan Rickman was fantastic! Pretty Women was the only song i bought
The white streak in Johnny's hair drove me insane. reminded me of the munsters
i think it did work for the most part, though. i decided i liked it &* hi! call me bri =]
