Is grease about conformitry? - 2007/11/28 15:38I grew up watching the movie not really thinking about the play and when I got older grease kind of escaped my mind recently a few of my friends were in it and I went to go see it. The ending disturbed me danny had apparently given up on Sandy so she decided that instead of being wholesome and pure I'll be a slut and He'll love me and she did. So what is with the conformity that is a horrible message to have in a musical! I didn't realize before Okay so maybe it was directed poorly... maybe but it is a serious roadblock because it is a popular show that a lot of people put on so it is limiting me.
Is the message really that bad or did I see some shitty version of the showCurrently Combeferre

Re:Is grease about conformitry? - 2007/11/28 16:34I've watched the movie a couple of times, and to me, the ending was just awful. I love the whole musical, but the message that they send out is wrong. I mean, 'you have to change, be slutty and be like everyone else to be happy' is not the best moral. I agree with you.
I don't want to offend anyone who loves the musical, because I love it too but the ending should of been different.

Re:Is grease about conformitry? - 2007/11/28 19:32True. Although (and this, to me, is more obvious in the stage version) Danny also changes for Sandy. He becomes more of a jock and stuff. The way it was presented in the version i was in (we didn't change lines or anything, just some blocking kind of suggested this) was that teenagers may try to change to impress each other but if you care for each other then it doesn't matter what you look like/act like.
^ In the end we had danny in a letterman's jacket and sandy in a leather jacket. after they sang "all chocked up" they traded jackets back.

Re:Is grease about conformitry? - 2007/11/28 23:28Wow, I never looked at it in such a negative light. I think the message is supposed to be that when you love someone you'll do anything to be with them. Danny thinks Sandy wants a jock that does well in school and behaves so he tries to become that. Sandy thinks that Danny wants a girl that isn't such a square. Someone who's a little more daring and the way she shows that she can be is to change her look and smoke a cigarette(which during that time period I don't think smoking was as big of a deal as it is today). Obviously they were both incorrect in their assumptions.
It really isn't that different from pretending that you're into a specific type of music, or sport because you like someone that is really into it.~Annie Currently: Soloist for Night of Jazz fundraiser Recently: Miss Thorn (Ruthless! the Musical), Emma Carew (Jekyll & Hyde)

1. Sandy doesn't become a slut. she just dresses more 'rock n' roll' to try and meet Danny on his turf. a slut is as a slut does, afterall.
2. Danny also tried to become what he thought Sandy wanted.
Danny didn't want to be with a good girl because it would ruin his bad boy reputation, but he figures out that he loves her enough to get over that and change his ways. Sandy realizes that Danny isn't the bad boy people think he is and maybe she needs to lighten up some. I think the message is that social norms and cliques really don't matter much in the long run.Chris

Re:Is grease about conformitry? - 2007/11/30 12:06i always hated the ending on the movie but mostly because the car actually takes off like an airplane or whatever at the end. it just ruined the whole movie for me. but i got over it. now i just turn it off right before that part. anyways, i always thought they both kinda changed, although i felt sorrier for Sandy having to where those ridiculous pants, lol!

Re:Is grease about conformitry? - 2007/11/30 17:22I'm not saying that pretending to be into something is right, but that it does happen. Especially when someone doesn't know someone that well, so they decide to make up a common interest to get to know them. I can't remember how many interviews I've read in which someone said they got into theatre to meet/get closer to a girl.~Annie Currently: Soloist for Night of Jazz fundraiser Recently: Miss Thorn (Ruthless! the Musical), Emma Carew (Jekyll & Hyde)

No one should wear those pants, even Olivia. I agree with the original poster about conformity. I'm not a big fan of the music in Grease, but it's fun to watch the movie.Name: Devyn
