Spiderman ... the musical? - 2007/08/27 23:43 I wish I was making this up, but my hubby (a big U2 fan) forwarded this to me today. It ran in the Hollywood Reporter a few months ago:

Marvel spins Spider-Man into Broadway musical
By Borys Kit

April 20, 2007

Get ready for "Spider-Man: The Broadway Musical."

That may not be the official title, but Marvel Studios is putting the pieces together for a musical on the Great White Way starring the popular superhero, which will be directed by Tony winner Julie Taymor, with U2's Bono and the Edge creating new music and lyrics for the project.

Auditions are taking place, and a reading is scheduled for the summer. No dates for a Broadway opening have been set.

Producing are Hello Entertainment/David Garfinkle, Martin McCallum, Marvel Entertainment and Sony Pictures Entertainment. In addition to co-producing the show, Hello Entertainment is arranging all financing for the project.

While the Spider-Man musical marks the first time a Marvel character has been the subject of a Broadway show, it's not the first time a superhero has hit the stage. Superman was in the spotlight of "It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman," which opened at the Alvin Theatre in 1966. Despite fairly positive reviews, it closed a few months later.

Before becoming Marvel chairman, David Maisel spearheaded the 1999 best musical Tony winner "Fosse."

Taymor won two Tonys for direction and costume design for the Broadway production of "The Lion King."

Re:Spiderman ... the musical? - 2007/08/28 00:06 Well, if nothing else, I'll have no trouble convincing the hubby to make a special trip to NYC ... which means I can squeeze in some *other* shows, too. -- Kari

Re:Spiderman ... the musical? - 2007/08/28 00:31 Harry Potter, Spiderman...... WHAT NEXT!?!?!

Personally, I like both the stories and I'm sure they would turn out fine. But still, I'm not keen on them becoming musicals... Honestly, I'm angry at Broadway (though of course this isn't its fault)....

Dare I say: doesn't this seem like selling out?

Re:Spiderman ... the musical? - 2007/08/29 17:51 All I can say is I feel sorry for whoever has to play M.J. if she has to sing and scream a million times every night. Maybe they'll do what they did for the movie and record her screams once and then replay it over and over.

Why can't they turn more practical movies into musicals? I'd much rather see something like Notebook: The Musical!

Though, I must admit I did want to see Lestat.

Actually, there is already a Superman musical. It's called It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman!

It's been around for quite a while... on Broadway in the 1960s, I believe. It wasn't there very long, but they made it into a TV movie too. Same composer as Annie & Bye Bye Birdie - he really only had the two big hits and then spent considerable time writing sequels.
