Singer's Tea - 2006/12/18 20:32Does anybody have a good recipe for singer's tea? I'd really appreciate it. I'm in a show right now where I spend most of my time onstage screaming and cackling like a madwoman but then I have to be a pit singer and sing all the songs on a mike backstage cuz our theatre has terrible acoustics and the combination has just been killing my throat. So if any of y'all have some good recipes, I'd love to try them.-Georgia

Re:Singer's Tea - 2006/12/19 06:43I absolutely love Traditional Medicinals Throat Coat Tea. This tea has a rich, earthy flavor, and the immediate soothing effect is so satisfying! It has a licorice-y taste and is a bit on the thick side, but with 2 teaspoons of honey it is positively delicious. It's available at most GNC stores, and costs less than $4 for a box of 16 tea bags.

Re:Singer's Tea - 2006/12/28 16:24I actually have two recipes. The everyday one is just hot water, lemon, and honey.
The crazy, scary, only when I am SICK but need to sing the next day: My mom calls it a "Hot Tati". It consists of hot water, lemon, a shot of rum, about a tablespoon of honey and a dash of cayenne pepper.
It's nasty, but it always works. I actually have no idea why the rum is necessary, so I'm relatively sure that it would work without it. The cayenne pepper is mostly to clear the sinuses.
[second recipe not recommended for everyday... it is my last resort for when i just HAVE to sing]

Alcohol kills bacteria. I've heard of gargling vodka when one has a throat cold for this very reason. I don't drink at all, myself, though, so I've never tried it.Kathleen Sera Current Shows: Aloha Pinafore - Volga Upcoming Auditions: Crazy For You - Irene Roth

Re:Singer's Tea - 2007/01/12 03:28Honey is an old wives tale...it will coat the throat causes me to sound like a cat coughing up a hairball ... From Michael Lessac's "Care and Training of the human voice"
1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 2 aspirin (not tylenol or motrin) in 4 to 6 ounces of the warmest water you can stand.
Gargle... if the throat Hurts, swallow after gargle. it sounds bad, tastes WORSE, but it pulled me thru a production of HMS PInafore (no mikes) with a 40 piece orchestra.

Re:Singer's Tea - 2007/01/13 21:16I use tea with lemon and honey. Mint tea also works. Honey, lemon and mint all have their benefits. However, caffeinated tea and lemon will both dry the throat, so you should not drink it right before or during a performance. Drink room temperature water instead.Maddy, aka minesayrejoice, GreenGirl, GavrocheGrrl, EriksWife (Erik'swife), and jewelkat.

Re:Singer's Tea - 2007/01/14 19:51I've heard a lot of people say Green tea is best for your voice. Is that true? (I personally can't stand tea, but just curious)The opposite of Rent is Oklahoma!!! Why didn't I think of that?
