Re:Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/03/09 23:36 I LOVE THE MOVIE OF THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. I saw the movie for the first time almost two years ago. I saw the national tour a month ago and they were both amazing. They were alike enough to be true to the same story but diffrent enough to not really be able to be compared against one another. The Phantom of the opera is one of my favorite movies!

Re:Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/03/10 04:30 I just realized I have't seen the Sound of Music movie. I have to go rent it now.

And I liked rent. I didn't think it was that different from the show and I like Rosario Dawson's voice more than Daphne Rubin-Vega's. I think the movie was good because they used the OBC(most of it anyway) and the OBC got much better with time. All together very good.
The opposite of Rent is Oklahoma!!! Why didn't I think of that?

Re:Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/05/06 19:06 I have to say, I love Chicago! I actually think it was done very well, but I'm not sure if it is much like the original. It's my understanding that the Broadway show has a more abstract set, but since it's movies they could do more.

I agree with Henrik about A Chorus Line. It came on T.V. one day, and I was very disappointed. I would love to see a stage performance of it one day.

And probably my very favorite- CABARET. That movie is *great.* Joel Grey is drop-dead amazing! And Liza! Oh My Gosh I love that movie! And it is about a million times better than the revival.

Also, a little guilty pleasure of mine is "Moulin Rouge" which hasn't ever been on stage. But...it's just so beautiful!

Re:Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/12/15 19:26 The Wizard of Oz...eh...they cut out the Jitterbug and the opening part of "Over the Rainbow." The first two verses of it are so pretty. "To a place behind the sunnn!" *sings* But, I still love it but I wish they didn't cut the Jitterbug scene. They actually filmed it but it didn't make it into the movie.

I really like the Sound of Music, it's my favorite along with Chicago. Chicago was pretty hardcore, ya know.

Re:Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/12/15 20:26 I love Funny Face so much, mostly because of Audrey Hepburn

My Fair Lady, though it's image is tarnished because of the whole Audrey didn't sing at all thing. (Can you tell who I'm reading a biography about right now? hehe)

Thoroughly Modern Millie is so cute, never seen it staged though, so I can't compare very well.

It's good, but different from the Stage version- they cut out 'No Way to Stop it', which is my favorite song, and 'An Ordinary Couple' was replaced by 'Must have done something good', which is too bad. Anyone know why this was?

Re:Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/12/16 21:09 I love Little Shop of Horrors. Now wait a minute, let's just think about the first 3/4. I know the ending isn't right, but besides that it's great! The casting is perfect and I love Rick Moranis as Seymour. He and Ellen Greene just have such great voices. Also, I read the libretto and besides the ending, the dialogue is word for word in some parts.

Re:Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/12/17 10:53 Everyone's already said most of mine!

I ADORE the Brandy version of Cinderella. I think Brandy did it well and Whitney Houston and Burnadette Peters were phenominal.

Chicago is a classic. Both on stage and the movie. I saw the movie first, then saw the stage show, then DID the stage show and I'll say, i'm still not tired of it. The stage show IS a lot more abstract and they took out some songs in the movie ("Me and My Baby", "My Own Best Friend"). I did love how they made all of the songs kind of appear in Roxie's head though. Great job Hollywood.

My Fair Lady the movie has always been a favorite of mine. I think Audrey Hepburn does so well and I love the scenery and costumes.

I've never seen Seven Brides for Seven Brothers on stage but Howard Keel is one of my favorite actors/singers EVER. His voice is amazing and he's even just as good in Kiss Me, Kate the movie.

Obviously Singin' in the Rain if teriffic. Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds are an amazing duo.

Another is Mary Poppins. Julie Andrews is flawless, like always. I saw Mary Poppins in the West End and honestly, I wasn't impressed. Maybe it was because I saw a matinee when I was tired one day, but I think the movie captures her character a lot better.

WOW! That was a lot more than I thought i'd have!!
Let me know if you hate anything...

Re:Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/12/23 16:23 I really like the old Shirley Temple movies. I don't know if ya'll count those as musicals or not, but there is random singing... ("Animal crackers in my soup..." lol)

As for musicals that were made into movies, some of my favorites are "Carousel", "The Music Man", and "Hairspray". (Even if they did take the best songs out of Hairspray...)

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that on the movie of FotR, they seem to really slow down the dialogue during songs? (Like at the beginning when Tevye is explaining the traditions and such...) I was listening to the movie cast's "Tradition" earlier, and that really bugged me.

Re:Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/12/26 00:53 Hello Dolly with Streisand basically defined my childhood so obviously that's top on the list!
Jesus Christ Superstar (both old and new) is amazing, but I wouldn't say they surpass the stage show...probably equal
Chicago
My Fair Lady - somehow more entertaining on film than onstage
Dreamgirls!
Grease
A Chorus LIne
Bye Bye Birdie - original more than 90s one but they're both great
Phantom

And the movies that (I think) should have stayed stage shows...
Evita (Madonna? Really?)
and Hairspray - don't kill me - I think that the stage show was more entertaining and exciting
Current role: Eponine in Les Miserables

Favorite role: Velma Kelly in Chicago, Mary Jane in Big River

Dream role: Shelly in Bat Boy, Eva in Evita
