Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/03/03 23:11Which movie/ musical do you think is the best out of them all? Or which one do you think did better than it's original Broadway cast/ performance? I havent seen all of them, (im itching to see Carousel) but so far, I've liked:
The Music Man - It kept Robert Preston which was good, and something about Shirly Jones's voice made Marian have more depth. Instrumentals were prettier too. (Even though they did take out most of My White Knight..)
Hello, Dolly! - Jerry Herman recommended it himself. Barbra Streisand was great, she was only in her twenties. And I liked the added song, Just Leave Everything To Me.*´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•´ Annie

Re:Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/03/04 09:24I think a lot of the older movie musicals were wonderful because they were very true to the originals. Here are some that come to mind (in order):
Oklahoma South Pacific Finian's Rainbow Brigadoon Funny Girl I also agree with Music Man and Hello Dolly.
I can tell you one I hate: A Chorus Line! First of all, it is such a theatrical show to begin with that can't really be captured on film. Also, they made it all about the romance between Cassie and Zach--including the song "What I Did For Love"--instead of the passion that makes people dedicate themselves to the theater. I was so disappointed.

Re:Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/03/04 09:30Well Henrick, Brigadoon wasn't very true to the original (cut/altered many songs) but I love Gene Kelly so I will let that one go!
Do you like the newer version of Oklahoma with Hugh Jackman?_____________ Kris MTA Admin

Re:Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/03/05 21:16Amen to triplethreat re: Brigadoon! I was lucky enough to play Fiona in high school and remember being sooo disappointed when I rented the movie and found out that a lot of the show's most beautiful songs ("From This Day On," "Come to Me, Bend To Me," "There But For You Go I") had been cut to make way for more dancing. Sigh.
I mean, Gene and Cyd are great, but I guess when you have a fondness for a particular show, you just hate to see it remade into something altogether different.
Call me a sap, but I'll always love Annie because I connect it so much to my childhood. When I was 5, my mom made me a "redhead" wig out of orange yarn so I could wear my Annie dress for Halloween. That thing rocked!-- Kari

Re:Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/03/07 08:24I love the Bye Bye Birdie movie from '90. I'm also a sucker for (don't kill me please) the Rent movie. Let me explain! I love to see most of the original cast together again and I think it puts an interesting spin on the show. The Guys and Dolls movies with Sinatra and Brando is a favorite of mine. And how could we forget West Side Story and Chicago? Oscar winners, come on!Shelby Jr. Moderator

Re:Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/03/07 11:11Okay, my bad on Brigadoon. It's been so long that I guess I have forgotten. To remind you, my first stage role ever was Charlie in Brigadoon in high school. I guess I just have a soft spot for Brigadoon in any form!
ASHS...Of course, West Side Story! Probably the greatest movie musical of all time!

Re:Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/03/07 23:56i really like the brandy version of cinderella. i just like the look/feel the sets and costumes give. and bernadette peters is wonderful.
i also like the new once upon a mattress movie. i just saw it recently when i found out about mattress auditions near where i live. everyone i've talked to about it says they hate it, but i think it's an excellent movie adaption of the musical. not to mention they added a few more witty jokes throughout that i think add to the overall sillyness of the story.
and BroadwaySomeday37, don't be ashamed of liking Chicago! i like it too! and if everyone else disagrees with us we'll just get together and have a chicago movie night without them!

Re:Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/03/08 00:07I really liked Chicago, too, but I was afraid to say it 'less I got flogged. Now I have no shame! Ha ha.
Since I never saw the show performed live, I can't really speak to how faithful the movie was to the original production ... was it very different? I wasn't sure if there were any purists out there who were outraged by it or something.
Personally, the main reason I give it high marks is that the actors actually sang the roles themselves without relying on dubbers, or at least that's my understanding. I really dug Catherine Zeta-Jones in particular. Rene Zellweger was all right, but that's a whole other thread ...-- Kari

I liked the way they interpreted some of the scenes. The whole puppet thing was extremely cool._____________ Kris MTA Admin

Re:Best Movie/ Musicals - 2007/03/08 00:26Just thought of this one, too, while I was replying to another post: I highly recommend renting Annie Get Your Gun. It's kind of old-school, but really fun.
And an interesting fact ... Judy Garland was originally cast as Annie Oakley and even filmed a few scenes, but then she started having trouble with her health and they had to replace her with Betty Hutton. The DVD I rented had special features with bonus clips of these previously unreleased musical numbers that are really kind of wacky 'cause it's Judy trying to play a country bumpkin. Very cool but kind of odd.
Judy's an icon, but based on the footage ... I'm glad Betty got the role instead! Judy Garland just isn't the Annie Oakley type. -- Kari
