Help with 30's style hair - 2007/02/19 18:42 Hey girls and guys! Thought I'd employ you for a bit of a challenge. (Kathleen, I have a feeling you may know the answer to this.) My high school is doing 42nd Street, as some of you may know. We've been instructed to do our own hair and makeup, which normally isn't a problem. EXCEPT ... the hairstyles for this show are much more complicated, especially for lil' old me. My hair is past my shoulders, and fairly thick. Any suggestions on how to perform the hairstyles? Shelby

Re:Help with 30's style hair - 2007/02/19 19:17 You're right, this is likely something Kathleen would know, but I did a little research for you for fun. (I remember seeing some good stuff when I was looking for something for me for South Pacific).

If your hair curls well (or will if you put in enough spray!) this may work (scroll down for 30s version):

Here's some more good ones:

Look up fingerwaves too. I think you're pretty much doomed to go with curls for this one.

Re:Help with 30's style hair - 2007/02/23 17:25 Sorry I haven't been around to answer this sooner

Kris gave some excellent pictures, though. You can take a look at my Amalia pictures in my gallery. It's very similar underneath my hats to the Katherine Hepburn picture in the first link Kris posted .

At this time, hair was growing out from the super short bobs, fingerwaves and eton crops of the twenties and curls were definitely in. So, still short, but not as extreme. Then, there were girls who weren't gutsy enough to chop their hair off, and wore short wigs in the 20s when they went out. Depending on your character, it might be plausible for your hair to be longer. Curling it will make it appear shorter, though. Bigger, tight curls will work best for this. I find with hot rollers and heat activated hairspray (we use thermasilk in the arisole cans.. we call it doom-spray), even hair that doesn't hold a curl easy and can at least last a two and a half hour show.

I know for me, my hair is at my hips and fairly thick, so a wig was more or less the only option for me. My Amalia wig was about $40, and you can buy pre-curled ones like that.

Hope I've managed to help a bit!

Re:Help with 30's style hair - 2007/02/23 17:49 I know this probably makes me cookoo bananas, but I'm going to attempt the finger waves for the show. I tried them once...they are HARD. Thank you both for the links! The Hepburn picture in the first is exactly what I want my hair to do. I'm highly doubting my hair will be into this idea. Still, we have a full hair and makeup run tomorrow, so I'll experiment and get back to you guys. I'll post pictures if I have them. Shelby
