Stuck with GREASE - 2007/02/18 22:25 BLECH.. sorry you Greasers, but I am so sick of this show.

I got stuck with directing Grease as our opening for 07-08 season...... I was hoping we wouldn't be able to get the rights but.. dangit, we did.

Now here is the problem.

With this stupid reality show "You're the one that I want" I am in a pickle.
You can get the music from the MOVIE to add to or replace in the show.. that isn't a problem.. but.... what to do what to DO!

I am a purist, even tho Grease is not my fave - I still am a purist for the show.
Problem is, with all this hype going on and since most have seen the MOVIE and not the SHOW, they will probably be expecting "You're the one that I want" and not "All Choked Up" (which I happen to LOVE - the only song in the whole show I really like)

This is not a very cultural town so 90% of the audience knows the show by the movie I am sure.

I will be adding "Hopelessly" since Sandy doesn't really have a solo.. no problem, but I am not going to use "Sandy" I am sticking with "Alone at the drive-inn" since it shows off Danny's voice better and is funny and not so bleedin serious. And no way in YOU KNOW WHERE am I going to add "Grease (is the word)" forget it!

My question is... should I add that stupid "You're the one that I want" disco party, in place of Choked?

UGH.

Re:Stuck with GREASE - 2007/02/18 22:37 See if you can add both. Many audience members (not to mention cast members) won't know Choked, and if you leave out You're the One That I Want, many people will want to know where it went. Hey yo!
Let's go to the mo-fro (Melody Freeze),
To get a fro yo (frozen yogurt),
then we'll stop by the scho-sho (Scholorshop),
on our way to WYSO (World Youth Symphony Orchestra)!

Just a little saying from Interlochen, possibly one of the greatest places on the globe!

Re:Stuck with GREASE - 2007/02/18 22:39 Why not use it as the curtain call? Then you'll pacify the reality TV junkies and it won't muck up the show (as much).

P.S. Hope you've got a kick a$$ choreographer. That's what makes or breaks this show, IMHO.

Re:Stuck with GREASE - 2007/02/18 22:39 nope one or the other, can't do both since they both are basically the same song (content wise)

Re:Stuck with GREASE - 2007/02/19 01:02 Maybe you should see which your cast is better at. Although I would do One that I want because having people come up to me saying "Why wasn't that one song you're the one that I want in it?" would make me want to kill everyone. The opposite of Rent is Oklahoma!!! Why didn't I think of that?

Re:Stuck with GREASE - 2007/02/25 20:39 i was talking to a friend today who is on his 4th call back for the new broadway prod. you know, the tv show danny and sandy one....

anyway, a couple of us asked him what the deal was with this new production and what songs they were using. believe it or not, he said that they were told they are using both the movie and the stage songs-- even though they are the "same". i find this totally bizarre and unnecessary.... oh, well....

i like kris' idea.....
They call me Jessica (like: They call me lady luck... lol)

Favorite roles:

Eva Peron, Evita; Jack's Mother, Into the Woods; Sonia, Godspell; Anything Goes, Reno Sweeney; Audrey, Little Shop of Horrors; Catherine, Pippin

Re:Stuck with GREASE - 2007/02/26 00:42 i have to third the "go for Kris' idea" opinion...

last time i was in grease we did all choked up and no matter how amazing of a performance we did all you heard from people exiting the theatre was "where was 'the one that i want'? thats the only thing i was looking forward to. i paid $28 and didnt even get the full show?" and other things of that nature that just make a performer feel like a tiny little frog that has been run over by a truck and then blown up by a kid with firecrackers

yeah...that bad

and i live in a cultural wasteland too...(a place where Candide is just candy spelled wrong,) so if you want the audience to LOVE it instead of just like it, id go with Kris' idea
Nikki!!

Re:Stuck with GREASE - 2007/02/27 02:29 I am so a purist. ok, f*** what the movie fans are going to expect, I'm gonna do the stage show.

I do think Kris has a good idea, though.

Re:Stuck with GREASE - 2007/03/01 23:44 When I saw Grease once, they did both songs at the end. I think they did "All Choked Up" and then went into "You're the One that I Want" and then they did a "We Go Together" reprise. CURRENTLY: Captain George Brackett in South Pacific AUDITIONS: Fiddler on the Roof, Les Miserables: School Edition, RECENTLY: Gremio in The Taming of the Shrew, Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks in Annie

Re:Stuck with GREASE - 2007/04/14 23:49 Broccoli...I think I bust a gut laughing at that one!!!!! The imagery...was hysterical. I'm still laughing.

Anyways.

I agree with Kris.....but I hate the idea of adding unnessessary stuff to pacify an uncultured swine of an audience...but I guess that makes me sound snobby. So Be It! I'm not a huge fan of the movie version...I sang a choral version in 6th grade, and the only reason I stuck to it is because I got to wear a fun costume for the performance. lol....But yeah....I'm afraid that even if you use it as a curtain call, people will still be like but...but...but...why wasn't it in the SHOW? ERLACK!!

so in conclusion to a horribly long ramble...I guess you have two options. Make an announcement at the beginning that this ISNT the movie, get over it, -OR-

Comply.
