Competitive Triumph - 2007/02/18 12:32
Yesterday, I performed at the District Solo & Ensemble Festival (discussed in my blog entry "Soloist Anticipation"), and I received a "1" rating from every event I was in (vocal solo--"O Cessate di Piagarmi", clarinet solo--"Suite by Schumann", and Women's Madrigal--"Sing We and Chant It"). Finally, I have broken my trend of receiving "2" ratings every year with my clarinet solos. And our madrigal sounded fantastic--the blend & balance was incredible. We didn't sound like freshman women at all.
A note on how Solo & Ensemble judging works: For Solo & Ensemble, one judge is present in the room, and they don't judge you against everyone else who performs. You're judged against a set of standards, which then demands excellence for those who receive a 1. It thus isn't possible for you to place higher than others who are awful by being mediocre.
