Amayzing Lesser Roles - 2007/02/07 01:49 Hey, all!

I was most recently in a production of Wendy Wasserstein's all-women play "Uncommon Women and Others" Nov 06. I played Carter. For those of you who don't know the play, Carter has the smallest role in the two-act play, about 10 lines in total (half of which consist of the word "Yes").

Well, our play was entered in the Kennedy Center American College Theater (KCACTF) Festival, where two actors for each production entered are nominated by an adjudicator (who comes to watch one of the performances) to participate in an acting scholarship competition called the Irene Ryan Awards. Imagine my surprise when I found out I, with my 10-line role, was one of the nominees! Especially because the other girls did such amazing jobs in their roles.

I loved playing Carter! Since I could memorize my lines really quickly, having so much time to analyze the character was tons of fun. In the past, I would often frown and go "Awww" if I got an ensemble or lesser role, but I've grown to look past that and be thankful for being cast in the first place.

Just goes to show you that even if you have an ensemble part or a lesser role, you can still shine and have fun in the process!

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had some amazing or super-fun lesser role stories to share!

Re:Amayzing Lesser Roles - 2007/02/07 05:50 ooo ive got a story!!

the first show i did in highschool was Romeo & Juliet. i was super nervous at the auditions, but i love Shakespeare to pieces and already knew the whole play by heart anyways, but i was still surprised when i got called back to read for juliet, b/c it was basically the senior show. well i didnt get juliet, but i did get chorus (the prologue person who says the whole "two households, both alike in dignity...ect") so while i was the first and last person on stage, i was basically in nothing else. i didnt mind tho, b/c normally grade 9s dont get any speaking parts at all in the senior show
well imaging my surprise when opening night not only is my entire family in the audience, but also all my friends and my entire english and drama classes...and my two best friends made signs, and my english teacher brought me flowers!!
i wasnt the only grade 9 in the show, but i was the only one with a speaking part, so it made me feel special to get all that support from everyone for such a small role

oh an hoshi, what happened with the scholarship competition?? did you win??

Re:Amayzing Lesser Roles - 2007/02/07 15:25 I've got one that I've played twice!

I've done Bye Bye Birdie in my middle school and my high school. Both times, I played the Mayor's Wife, among other things. The middle school production was tiny and so I was actually a mixture of the Mayor and his wife. It was overall fun, but I was young and it wasn't my best job. This last year, however, was much better. We actually had a mayor, which was a nice change. He was a senior who I bonded very close with, having him carrying my fainted self off stage numerous times during rehersals. It's also very fun to ham it up on stage and faint like a goofball. If I'd had a larger role in the scene, it would have no doubt been less comical and I wouldn't have had the time to make a very tight friend.
