Murder Mystery Party - 2007/01/27 23:36 Has anybody here had a murder mystery party? If so, which one did you do? How did it go? What food did you serve? How exactly did the game work? I want to hold one, but I am a total noob to this. CURRENTLY: Captain George Brackett in South Pacific AUDITIONS: Fiddler on the Roof, Les Miserables: School Edition, RECENTLY: Gremio in The Taming of the Shrew, Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks in Annie

Re:Murder Mystery Party - 2007/01/28 00:01 haha.... shelby started this thread earlier today-- almost exact words!! maybe one of the mods will move it to there. but....

i am a member of a murder mystery troupe. we do a show every couple of months, sometimes a couple in a month and sometimes a couple in a weekend. we do one called Mafia Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre, so we have a spaghetti dinner. this is not a game (kris said she did a game), but i am sure you could do this on a small scale or they sell the boxed version of it. depending on your theme, you could probably serve your guests whatever you want! you could get wacky and peel grapes and say they are eye balls!! have "cocktails" and give them funny names. you could probably get away with appetizers. have fun!!
They call me Jessica (like: They call me lady luck... lol)

Favorite roles:

Eva Peron, Evita; Jack's Mother, Into the Woods; Sonia, Godspell; Anything Goes, Reno Sweeney; Audrey, Little Shop of Horrors; Catherine, Pippin

Re:Murder Mystery Party - 2007/01/28 00:14 I think Jaymie started this thread because he wanted to talk specifically about the game rather than the performance art.... right?

I've done quite a few of them over the years, most of the ones we did were from the "Evening Of Murder" series. Since most of them are based around a specific theme, it's really easy to plan because you can do everything around the theme (food, decorations, etc). I'm pretty sure that this brand comes with some suggestions for this stuff as well.

It might seem kind of cheezy, but I've really enjoyed them. It gives everyone something to do, breaks up dinner really well (you can do each round between a dinner course) and it's amazing how it will bring some people out of their shell.

The kit includes a basic character description of each character. You choose a character for each guest and then send them an invite with their description so they know how to dress. Then at the party each person has a little book with questions, things to say, etc in each round of play. One person's book will actually tell them that they are in fact the murderer, will tell them what really happened but then tell them some lies to tell.

The instructions are very thorough - anyone can pull off hosting one of these!

Re:Murder Mystery Party - 2007/01/28 09:58 Cool! Thanks, triplethreat, that's exactly what I was asking for.

sorry, jaymie!

the kits are pretty available in stores/online, but let me know if you want the name of the company we use for our troupe. you can order that script and several others (there are a couple of different themes) and use them however you want. one suggestion is to use it for "team building" but i think one of the suggestions is also the party-style and it you send out invitations, etc. in fact, for one of our performances, the hosts did that-- sent 20s-style invites and told people to dress as flappers and gangsters, etc.

let me know how you do or if you want the website!

Re:Murder Mystery Party - 2007/01/29 22:00 I was in a Murder Mystery party that my older sister had a few years ago. I'm not sure what happened with it though, I just know what she told me. I was their for about 15 minutes, and then I had to die. I went next door and hid out after that. CURRENT ROLE: Liesl/Maria understudy in The Sound of Music
Director for Into the Woods Jr.

Re:Murder Mystery Party - 2007/01/31 00:15 These things are great. I have done a few. Mostly for fundraisers. Like what was said before, if you buy the kit it has a theme. For example ski lodge or western or tropical island, something like that. That's where the "murder" takes place and it's very simple to plan your menu around it. Good luck!
