theatre camp - 2007/01/17 19:39Ok, wasn't sure where to put this, so just bear with me I'm 16 (a rising high school senior) and I'm trying to find a good musical theatre intensive or workshop- preferably overnight and with housing.
I know, I know- I'm sure not asking a lot.
But still- any suggestions would be welcome, since my own Internet searches have been less than fruitful. Thanks! Samantha

Re:theatre camp - 2007/01/17 23:56I've done a little research myself, and there are a lot of camps I came up with...I just don't know which ones are really good. Ummm....There are the summer programs at the three performing arts boarding schools in the US that seem good. They are Idyllwild Arts (Academy? I think) in CA, Interlochen in Michigan(?, if not somewhere in the Midwest), and Walnut Hill in Mass. Personally, I would like to go to the one in Walnut Hill...they seem like they have a really good camp. The only problem with these are they are really expensive. You could also check the U.S. Performing Arts out...they are all over the U.S., but I'm not sure if they truly are good...and ummm there are some more, but I can't think of them....Hope this might have helped.

Re:theatre camp - 2007/01/18 23:38I have a friend who went to Interlochen this summer and loved it, but her advice is not to do the vocal program unless that's all you like because its pretty much a 3 week long honor choir. Stage Door Manor is supposed to be good too. I have a list of theatre camps somewhere but I can't find it right now. When I do, I'll make sure to post it. I did Kids who Care For the first time and its really amazing. We have exchange students from all over, my best friend there is from Scotland. It's in Fort Worth, Texas so you probably haven't heard of it and it's not a sleepaway camp, out of town students stay with host families but it's really great.-Georgia

Re:theatre camp - 2007/01/19 01:27Interlochen (blue lake is the name, i think) is in Michigan. i know that it is a very good camp for instrumentalists. i almost went for violin but it was a lot of money so i went to a camp more local. Interlochen does have the performing arts camp, too. if i had gone, i would have done a combined program. i do know people who went for both instrument and performing arts-- again, it was expensive, but a good experience if you can fit it into your budget.
there are several camps in new york state. i think french woods is there and i know someone who went there several years in a row and enjoyed her experience.
also check and see if you have Governor's Schools. if you do, audition if you can. there are programs in different fields of study and are for students between their junior and senior year. i think you said you're a senior, so you might not be eligible.....
AND you might want to check out internships w/ disney. they do lots of performances at the parks, so it's not just costumed characters. and you get to make some good connections, as well as build your resume. you might be too young this year, but hey, it's worth looking at! They call me Jessica (like: They call me lady luck... lol)
Favorite roles:
Eva Peron, Evita; Jack's Mother, Into the Woods; Sonia, Godspell; Anything Goes, Reno Sweeney; Audrey, Little Shop of Horrors; Catherine, Pippin

Re:theatre camp - 2007/01/19 02:00Interlochen! I was hoping someone would bring that up. I've heard fabulous things about this camp. Also, the Broadway Bound camp in NYC is supposed to be very good. A friend of mine has gone for a year or two. She loved it and got a chance to see Spelling Bee and Drowsy while up there. She met a bunch of actors and learned a lot.
These camps are so expensive though! I stay at home and read books...and dream about the camps. Shelby Jr. Moderator

Re:theatre camp - 2007/01/20 18:59Actually, I'm a junior- and I turn 17 in a week- so I think I'm still to young to work at Disney (don't you have to be 18?) Interlochen does sound amazing, but price is definately an issue in my family- I'm one of those lucky families that the government says is too rich to qualify for financial aid, but my mom definately disagrees. I did find out that Oklahoma City University has a really good 3-week program- and they offer merit based scholarships! Yeah!
On a slightly related note- has anyone heard of the Theatre Arts Center in NYC? I know they have a month-long day program, and they accept out-of-town video auditions, but I was wondeirng where the out-of-towners stay if they get accepted (I'm impatient- I e-mailed them but they haven't gotten back to me yet).

Re:theatre camp - 2007/01/20 22:10sorry-- thought you wrote you were a high school senior, but you did say you were 16. yes, the disney internships are part of the college program and you need to be 18. i know people who did it and one of them got to know jen gambatese (All Shook Up) who also did the internship. here's the link:
since you will be between your junior and senior year, see if your state has a governor's school-- it's a good way to do performing arts stuff, take classes and train for about a month, and not pay since it is subsidized by the state education fund (at least that's how nj's are run).

Re:theatre camp - 2007/01/20 23:30Unofrtunately, Texas doesn't have a governor's school- in fact- I could only find them in about 6 states- all on the East Coast. Hmmm. Are you allowed to go to other state's governor's schools, by any chance?

okay, well I don't know much about you, so I don't know if you're planning on pursuing a [musical] theatre major in college. but what I'm looking at for the summer are the colleges I'm interested in. If you go on their website, a lot of them have really cool musical theatre-based summer programs. That way, you can also get a feel for what it's really like living in the dorms there, taking classes, etc. and see if its a good fit for you. Like the steinhardt program at NYU has a ton of different summer programs for theatre and personally I think it would be amazing to be dorming in NYC for three weeks!!
So I hope that helped! Then again, if you're not majoring in musical theatre, it might not have helped at all! hahah!
And I have heard absolutely fabulous things about Interlochen... can you imagine going to the actual boarding school? Like a performing arts HIGH SCHOOL?? Oh gosh... ! Well, good luck in finding one! -bri&* hi! call me bri =]
current role: Narrator in Joseph...Dreamcoat
soon to audition for: Tony 'n' Tina's Wedding, Picnic, HSM (cringe) Hello Dolly!
