Re:Awkward Stage Kissers - 2008/01/22 18:54the first kiss Magnolia and Ravenal have is at the end of a scene and so we had to sort of 'freeze" kissing... and the orchestra was playing Soooo.... slllooowwww.... we had our lips locked for ages and ages.
oh my goodness. This happens to me all the time, but not with stage kissing. I have plenty of stories where directors were giving notes to other parts of the cast in the scene and just left me hanging there for half an hour. Sigh.-Ali

Re:Awkward Stage Kissers - 2008/02/06 14:36Okay my first stage kiss was my freshman year of high school. We were doing Big River and I was Mary Jane and the guy who played Huck Finn (who I had to kiss) was a senior. Well, it was my first kiss ever, and I had to be the one to initiate the kiss. I was soo nervous and of course the whole cast was backstage hooting and making me even more nervous. Well, I stood there for a while just looking at Huck, then I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and LITERALLY ran into his face with my mouth. And then bolted offstage. It was THE most AWK thing ever! I seriously head-butted him in the chin with my mouth.Current role: Eponine in Les Miserables
Favorite role: Velma Kelly in Chicago, Mary Jane in Big River
Dream role: Shelly in Bat Boy, Eva in Evita

Re:Awkward Stage Kissers - 2008/02/06 15:15In the show I'm in now, I don't actually kiss anyone, but I have a near-kiss with the guy who I like in the play, and then we''re interrupted by the school bell ringing. The show is doublecast, so for the first couple times, I was woring with the other guy. Finally, the other day, I was reunited with my guy. When I leaned in for the "kiss", he stayed where he was, about five paces away from me. This was really embarassing because he really didn't seem to want to kiss me- and we don't, anyway! So I was really worried about it for Monday's rehearsal, but he actually came near enough so that it looked realistic. In fact, I was surprised how close he came.Auditioning for: Brigadoon, theatre season, American Music Theatre, Into the Woods, Sound of Music, and AMDA.

Re:Awkward Stage Kissers - 2008/02/06 16:32ahh the curse of the stage kisses! my first ever role, there were 2 stage kisses. One i knew about which i got soo worried over, and the person i was kissing was 12/13 (mind you wouldnt have thought it he looked at least 16 at the time) and i was 15. made even worse by the fact he was on roller blades (which made him about 6ft to my 5'3 ) the latter one was added in about a month before, and terrified me a thousand times more as the guy was older than me and far more intimidating. lets just say - washing machine springs to mind!!! hahahaha
and the last stage kiss i had, was the most awkward as it was with somone who had already admitted they had feelings for me which made it 10000000000 more times awkard as i had told him that i didnt return them!!!
did i mention through out all these my director and MD had incredible amounts of fun teasing/tormenting me for months!!!!
and now i have kisses in FAME - i fear a may get a reptuation LOLcurrent role: ....Carmen - Fame The Witch - Into the woods.
previous roles: Phillia - A funny thing happened on the way to the forum Miranda - Return to the forbidden planet
Dream roles : Elphaba (wicked) Wendla/ilse/matha -actually just the whole cast!!! (Spring awakening) mimi(rent)Mrs Lovett (Sweeney todd) Velma Kelly (Chicago) The witch (into the woods- YAY) eponine (les mis)

Re:Awkward Stage Kissers - 2008/02/10 17:18In the show I'm in right now, I kiss someone on the cheek, which isn't awkward until he makes this goofy, elated face that is the funniest thing I've ever seen and I have to say a line after the audience cracks up for about five minutes without breaking character. I had to sit down for a few minutes while I recovered from the hilarity of the situation. (This happens with this guy in every show I'm in. Its like saturday night live- must...not...laugh...gah!)-Ali

Re:Awkward Stage Kissers - 2008/02/17 11:45Ha ha, so the other day at rehearsal, when I went to kiss this guy on the cheek, I lost my balance and kind of, like, fell into him. So I ended up with my lips to his cheek for WAY longer than anyone kisses someone on the cheek.Auditioning for: Brigadoon, theatre season, American Music Theatre, Into the Woods, Sound of Music, and AMDA.

Re:Awkward Stage Kissers - 2008/02/25 14:57While playing The Baker's Wife (Into The Woods), the Baker was played by a dear, close friend of mine since childhood... who was coincidentally, not-so-secretly in love with me. Yikes. I had been putting him off for months up to that point, so needless to say, the kissing was very awkward. He was bit too um, eager? There is the cutest picture of us from the show where he has his arm possessively around my waist, pulling me in and my face is scrunched up, looking uncomfortable (in a joking way). I thought it actually gave us a rather natural, old-married couple chemistry, in a way.
Then, Cinderella's Prince was played by a guy who I had secretly crushed on for some time but he had been horribly mean to me the year before when I was recovering from jaw surgery... and I had to kiss him about a dozen times. Ugh! I was totally repulsed... and started dating him four months later! Ah, high school memories. Currently playing: Lily! (Secret Garden) YAYAYAYAY!

Re:Awkward Stage Kissers - 2008/02/28 16:11Our Rolf had to kiss Liesl and the first time Bryan and Maddie tried it, Bryan somehow hit his head against Maddie's and they were both screaming "OWWWW!!" and everyone in the room was laughing and cheering.
Best of all: Daniel got it on video. Although it had to get deleted because Bryan put Daniel in a headlock, according to J.T., until he promise to delete it."Doctor Who, Doctor Who, does whatever a doctor can do.."

Re:Awkward Stage Kissers - 2008/03/07 13:33I was just in Cinderella with a local community theatre. The guy that plays the prince is just AWK in real life, so so awkward. The first kiss that they have in the show is at the ball when him and Cinderella run into the garden together. This entire time, I'm off in a wing and can see the prince the entire time (Cinderella's back was to us during the kiss). They kiss and the clock chimes a couple of times and Cinderella pulls away, the Prince trying to pull her back. When they separate, he had the absolute most creepy smirky look on his face. Very unnatural, very awkward. It cracked me up every time.

So...in the show I got done with about three weeks ago I had to kiss a guy two different times. Both times we were interrupted by either a person or a loud speaker. Whats funny is when you kiss and either the loudspeaker or person is late on there cue. The first time that happened, we got tired of it and broke apart. My director went OFF on us. "IF YOU HAVE TO KISS FOR 15 MINUTES, YOU'LL KISS FOR 15 MINUTES UNTIL YOU HEAR (whichever one)"
Or...something to that effect.
Whats also funny was when my director was trying to figure the blocking for one of the scenes. Basically, me and the guy are out on a picnic and we start making out and have to roll over. (HAHA) You should have seen him trying to explain where he wanted us in the end...
but it all worked out fine.
And then there was the time we performed it for the school. (it was a competition OAP so we didnt have set performances for the school or anything...just competition)
Afterwards:
Girl: DID YOU AND *GUYS NAME HERE (LOL)* REALLY KISS?
Me: Yes.
Girl: REALLY????????????
Me: Yes.
Repeat this with at least 6 other girls (and even a guy or two).
All in all: I've learned stage kissing isnt something to be worried about, just go out there and do it! Currently in: Thoroughly Modern Millie (Gloria/Mathilde/Ensemble)

Re:Awkward Stage Kissers - 2008/04/28 20:00Heyhey, just thought I'd update now that the show's over and I've actually done a stage kiss:
Since my last post, we kicked out the flamboyantly gay Gaston and replaced him with a freshman (who happened to be about four inches shorter than me, but that's beside the point). But our assistant director- who is actually a kid who graduated last year- blocked the scene where it's written that Gaston was supposed to kiss me instead of the director, and for some reason he just completely ignored it. So that kiss never happened.
Then instead of just one kiss with the Beast, we decided to do 3: one after the transformation, one after the little "one thing forever true: I love you!" part when we come back out, and one while everyone else is "ahh"ing at the very end of the finale, which we held until blackout. The first time we practiced it, our director wanted us to be comfortable with it and everything, so she literally locked us in the auditorium by ourselves (she left to do paperwork or something) and made us stay in there for 15 minutes to practice it. I think the most awkward thing about it was the circumstances, haha. I mean, not that we were kissing for the first time, but that we were locked in there by ourselves. And the fact that she left it up to us to figure out what we wanted those 3 kisses to look like; it's a lot more awkward to have a discussion about kissing than to actually do it.
Anyhow, after the first one, it really was fine. I don't know why everyone outside of theatre thinks it's such a big deal.
Ooh, we did have one awkward moment though, on our wet tech/dress rehearsal combo. It was the first time we'd done it with lights and at the end we're supposed to kiss until the blackout. So we start kissing, and we knew it would be a good 5-10 seconds, but they just did not cue the blackout. So the cast is done singing and the orchestra is done playing, and they're all doing their pointing-up-and-looking-at-us thing, and we're... still kissing. For a very long time. Haha. That got fixed pretty quickly.
But I did get a surprising number of comments about it afterwards. A lot of people asked if I really kissed him (...?) and a lot more were like, "Woah... you guys were really getting into it. Do you like each other or something?" or something along those lines. Which we didn't- we were just friends, and it's not like we were all over each other or disgusting, but you have to get into it in some sense. You can't stand still with lips touching for 10 seconds and make it believable.- Caitlin / Cait -

Re:Awkward Stage Kissers - 2008/04/28 22:04When I was in Little Shop, Seymour and Audrey were only supposed to exchange a small kiss after "Suddenly Seymour", but the guy who played Seymour decided to be funny in a rehearsal, grab Audrey, and turn his back to the audience so it looked like it was a full-blown make-out session. We thought this was soooooo funny that we put it in the show~Sarah~

Re:Awkward Stage Kissers - 2008/04/28 22:22In my experiences, usually what make a stage kiss uncomfortable is
a) the working relationship between the people involved b) the behavior of the other people present during rehearsals
This is what makes things awkward most often during highschool shows - when other people are acting juvenile it's hard to keep on being professional yourself.
What I've really enjoyed about my current show is that the leading man and I have an excellent working relationship, so the kiss we have (even though quite long!) has never been an issue. We are able to joke about it, which makes it easy.
I've had other shows where I haven't gotten along with my kissing partner, and so of course that makes things much more difficult._____________ Kris MTA Admin

Thats how it was with me and the guy I had to kiss. We did not get a long AT ALL. But luckily, we got over that (something you have to do with acting I suppose!) and it apparently worked out well!Currently in: Thoroughly Modern Millie (Gloria/Mathilde/Ensemble)

Re:Awkward Stage Kissers - 2008/04/30 10:10My daughter played Marion in MM a few years back, and one of her best friends in the world was Harold. She was 12, he was 11. There was a definite difference in height.
Because of their ages, the director had signs made up that said "Marion kisses Harold" and "Marion kisses (the other...I forgot)". But when my daughter had to "kiss" Harold, they pretended despite the sign, and everyone could see that she was dropping her knees. It elicited laughter every performance.
I've had my share of uncomfortable stage kisses. The first was when I was in HS (long, long ago) playing Mina in "Dracula". I was supposed to plany one big, wet, sexual kiss on one of the guys, and the first time I found the courage to do it, he informed me (as I was leaning in) that he would never purposely kiss me because I am a girl (this was when very few men came out in HS). Yeah, that's encouragement!
The worst for me was a few years back when I was performing as Mother in "A Christmas Story". Throughout the show, kisses are supposed to happen. I was fine with it as they were old married couple pecks, more or less. But the guy playing the Old Man ate, I swear, garlic and onions for every meal. I literally had to hold my breath before the kisses happened. And even then, I was the one who nearly puked! (For the record, I never figured out a polite way to tell this guy that he had a serious halitosis problem).
Mostly, I find stage kisses uncomfortable but workable. Then again, I'm now old enough that I don't have to worry about them too often!Andrea
