Character Shoes - 2008/04/28 00:17 Hey everyone,

I wanted some opinions on character shoes. I have been rehearsing in my capezio t-straps and they are killing my feet. I would like to find something comfy that will be good to dance in for hours and hours. So just whatever your shoe preference is, share it. I would really appreciat opinions!

Thanks!!

Chrissy

Re:Character Shoes - 2008/04/28 00:43 Well, for dance rehearsals, I usually stick to ballet slippers or jazz shoes at first, so I can get used to the choreo without having to worry about dancing in heels- especially for harder dance numbers.

For actual shows, I am very happy with my 1 1/2 inch heel SoDanca character shoes. They're comfy and affordable. But they're also really slippery. Grips are your best friends!
I'm Micaela. But you can call me Mickey!

Currently: Yonah in Children of Eden. Indian in Peter Pan.

Dream Roles- Lucy in YGMCB, Penny in Hairspray (She's hysterical!), Anything in Oklahoma. (I've always wanted to do that show......)

Re:Character Shoes - 2008/04/29 13:52 Dance Shoes!

I danced in tons of shows and have danced professionally. For rehearsals, I rarely use heels. Is it required for your show for some reason? I recommend you get some good dance type of tennis shoes that have no rubber in the middle of the sole so that you can point your toes. The rubber is only around your toes and ball of your foot and then on the heel. This shoe does not have rubber in the arch area of the shoe, just the soft leather that raps around the rest of your foot. You can find them in dance shoe stores. I can't remember the name of them, they are some form of jazz shoe.

I usually use regular tennis shoes for rehearsals. Usually cheaper and saves wear and tear on my expensive dance shoes. I usually find tennis shoes that do not have thick soles - something close to jazz shoes, but not exactly. Heavy duty shoes used for running and playing basketball is not good. Find a tennis shoe that you can do turns in without sticking too bad. The soles are usually thinner and the bottoms of the soles are smoother than most. I won't recommend a brand as tennis shoes are always changing. You just have to shop till you find something you feel you can do your moves in. However, for some shows, if the dance is really heavy, you have to use real dance shoes. In that case, I use my jazz shoes. However, I never use heels until it is absolutely necessary. That is usually during dress rehearsals.

Another reason your feet hurt might be the type of floor you are rehearsing on. If you are dancing on cement, that can cause foot and leg problems. It is healthier to dance on proper dance floors or on wooden floors that can absorb the shock of landing. Another thing that might help is to really warm up and stretch your feet and legs before every rehearsal.

Split-sole.

I have capezio characters (not t-strap though) and I love them. I actually often wear them to weddings because I can dance in them all night, unlike a regular street heel.

It is essential when you buy dance shoes that you get fitted by someone who knows what they are doing - it is quite possible that your shoes hurt because they aren't the right size or width.

What part of your foot hurts?

Re:Character Shoes - 2008/04/29 14:16 Yes, I agree with triplethreat. If you buy new dance shoes, they must be fitted by a professional to get the perfect fit. Also, what shoe works for one may not work for another. I will add that ballet shoes and some jazz shoes are not good unless you are rehearsing on a proper floor. So, if you are rehearsing on cement, you definately need a shoe that can do some absorbing. Some folks have more problems than others. It's a matter of what you are born with.

"Split-sole"! Couldn't remember the name - had a senior moment.
