uptempo song for a mezzo? - 2008/04/17 23:44 hi. yeaaa, my teacher yesterday told us we were gonna have a master class next monday and we'd need some songs and monologues to bring to class. I'm guessing I'm gonna need an uptempo song for it since most of my audition songs (or songs i've learned from shows I've been) are on the ballad side.

I'm ok with finding monologue material on my own, but I have no idea what I should bring for an uptempo song! It's important that I have a good song cause the people that are coming are quite important themselves, so I want to be able to impress them if I have to sing. I really wouldn't post this so last minute, but we didn't find out that we were having guest artists until yesterday!

So about my voice. I'm a mezzo who loves singing both mezzo and alto (1st Soprano is possible for me to sing, but usually a NO-NO; I HATE IT!). My audition song I use A LOT is "Stranger to the Rain" from Children of Eden, usually sung transposed to a half step lower or in the original key. So I'm a belter, but not like super high or anything...I'm waiting for a vocal teacher to help me with the higher notes (i have it, but am just scared to use it for fear of killing my voice). As for my head voice, I can sing up to B5, but am most comfortable up to A5. O and my break (around G4-A#4) is a tad bit weak if it's in head voice.

Re:uptempo song for a mezzo? - 2008/04/18 05:39 I think you need to start listening to lots of musicals out there, a good start are the sheet music singers musical theatre anthologies (mezzo/belter for you). I also suggest you don't transpose songs from their original key, it is usually not looked upon well my panels and in the profession (although I realise you are not auditioning professionally).

Re:uptempo song for a mezzo? - 2008/04/18 10:27 haha. i WOULD take my time and listen to a whole lot more musicals(even if i do already ) , but I'm just kinda in a rush to find a song. People from Grease are coming, like the original Sandy and musical director or something if I heard correctly. Also, don't a lot of anthologies have a bunch of overused songs? haha. I'm just hoping someone can point me in the direction of an uptempo that'll just be really easy and quick to learn by monday. I haven't really taken the time to find an uptempo song cause my voice just sounds tons better when I sing a ballad...and so far that's all i've needed in the past.

THANKS though.

and about transposing, I had no idea. I mean I brought sheet music that had been transposed a half-step lower to an audition, and i don't think they would've known if i hadn't have told them it was transposed (i didn't do it myself cause i bought the music offline so i just had the computer do it before i printed it out.

Re:uptempo song for a mezzo? - 2008/04/18 12:06 No easy way around it -- you've got to listen to shows and do your homework. What we might suggest might not be for you. There is so much belt, uptempo music out there to choose from. Just about every show has something you could sing.

If you truly don't have time to do homework right now, I'd just bring in what you do best. Just because everyone else may be doing an uptempo doesn't mean you have to. Be yourself and do your best, most show off song. Even if it is a ballad. You aren't auditioning for a real show and nobody on a guest panel is going to be that picky.

However, if you are serious about doing musicals, you've got to prepare for the future. Start listening to shows and when you hear a song that you like and you think you can do, write it down and search for the music. Start working on it now. Don't wait till the last minute to find material. Have a big list of songs you can pull out of hat at any time. They should be all different types of song styles and ranges within your voice.

Re:uptempo song for a mezzo? - 2008/04/19 11:26 thanks. haha. i'm not trying to bring in only an uptempo song. i wanted to bring in at least 2 contrasting pieces.

and haha. i meant i didn't want an uptempo belting song since stranger to the rain is kinda belty already.

yea, i understand i should've started my homework already.....jr. year of high school makes it hard to balance with theatre stuff. i'm planning to start doing extensive research on musicals and plays this summer--When i'll definitely have time to.

thanks though for your advice. much appreciated. i think i'll ask a friend for music though...we have a sort of similar range.
