Ugh.Theatre Company drama...& SANDRA JOSEPH! - 2008/03/27 17:52 So,the amazingly Talented Sandra Joseph came to our school today(she played Christine for 11 YEARS in POTO on Broadway!)she sang and told her tales of her broadway experiences,it was SOOOOOOOOO COOL! I was kind of angry, considering a select few students got to work with her one-on-one,I of course wanted to be one of them.I thought my acting teacher selected the students, just by the way she talked about it.And she made it sound like she selected the students and I asked her why I wasn't choosen she said it was because I was a Sophomore...which is understandable. But i noticed another sophomore was 'choosen' when i asked my teacher about it she said more or less that it was because he was a boy.

I told my dad this in a huff after school, because Sandra asked why I didn't sing for her.My dad called my acting teacher and my mom emailed her,I don't want this to mess up my acting stuff at school,I was just blowing off a little steam. So my question is...How should I clear my name and make myself get back into My acting teacher's good graces?

Re:Ugh.Theatre Company drama...& SANDRA JOSEPH! - 2008/03/27 18:48 Well, first of all, don't assume your teacher is thinking about it as much as you are. We are always hardest on ourselves, aren't we?

And secondly, if it's bothering you that much, just tell your teacher what you told us... basically apologize and leave it at that. A simple sincere apology "Gosh I'm SO sorry if I came off poorly yesterday when I was upset about not getting to sing for Ms. Joseph. I was just disappointed and I took it badly. Thank you so much for the opportunity to meet her! That in itself was an honor!") can go a long way to repairing silly oops moments like this!

I'm sure they'll understand! Who wouldn't be upset about not getting to sing for her!? I'm sure you were far from the only one upset about not being chosen.

Chin up! Like I said, I imagine you are thinking WAY more about this than your teacher is. Most importantly, whatever you decide to do, try to forget about it and don't dwell!

Re:Ugh.Theatre Company drama...& SANDRA JOSEPH! - 2008/03/27 23:44 Another way to look at it is that Ms. Joseph is just another actress like you are. In the end, she isn't going to be able to advance your career in any way other than giving her reaction and advice on your singing. Most likely, if you had been able to sing for her, you probably wouldn't see her again for years (if that) and she probably wouldn't remember you. If you stay in the business, you will meet and work with many other performers just as well known or more so than her. This isn't to run her down - I'm sure she is as wonderful as you say. I'm just trying to put it in perspective. You will get many more opportunities in the future if you keep working hard. Plus, each year you get older, the better singer you will become for when the opportunity comes again.

As for your teacher, the apology is the only way to go. Also, talk to your parents about this so that they won't react in this way again when you are blowing off steam.

I know that you are young and eager and LIVE to perform in shows, but you always have to be careful to not ever let disappointment show in front of others in your field. Protect yourself and learn to be happy for your friends who get chances/opportunities. If you are sincere in your happiness for them - others will be able to tell and their friendship is FAR more important than getting the biggest lead in the hottest show. Rewards will always follow you if you are 1st a good and sincere friend.

Re:Ugh.Theatre Company drama...& SANDRA JOSEPH! - 2008/04/06 20:39 Take it from a teacher. If she is a good teacher, you don't need to apologize. If she isn't, it won't help. Although, that "picking a student because he is a boy" business gives me pause.

If she is an actress herself, she already knows how disappointed you are and why.

I think I would ask your acting teacher (in private) "are you mad at me?" If she says "yes", say "sorry! I was steamed!" Again, a a good teacher gets it, especially one that works with actors and actresses all day long ("my favorite expression is "let's keep the drama on stage"!).

I tell my students that short of them throwing a desk out of a window, there is nothing that I can't forgive them for. What you are in the middle of is nowhere near as bad as that!

I was just watching SNL the other night and Christopher Walken (who was the host) had a shirt that said that expression in one of the skits!!! I even said to my dad, "i love his shirt!"
