Annie, Jr. - 2008/03/21 00:19Does anybody know how Annie, Jr. is different from Annie (Senior, I guess)? There is a local production that is auditioning for Annie, Jr. and I have decided that I can't leave this world until I play Daddy Warbucks (look at my picture and that should give you an idea of why). I have seen the Alber Finney movie version (stupid, if you ask me) and the Victor Garber movie version (much better) and I have seen the touring company do it live, but I don't know what they cut to junior-ize it.
Anybody?

Re:Annie, Jr. - 2008/03/21 01:02The main purpose of the Jr. versions is to alter the show so that it can be performed exclusively by children/youth (for schools, etc). Are you sure this production is auditioning adults?
Basically the Jr. versions shorten the book slightly (sometimes removing or simplifying secondary plots), simplify the music and often alter the vocal requirements of the roles to make them easier for young voices to perform.
There is a website with specific info on each show: http://www.broadwayjr.com_____________ Kris MTA Admin

Re:Annie, Jr. - 2008/03/21 08:21I was stage manager for Annie Jr last year and it was made up of mainly girls and 3 boys from 7-8th grade. The plot it simplified as well as the music as tripletheat said, but to tell you the truth, I really liked it. It is so much like the movies and stage shows because there isn't all that much to take out from it. It's not like Rent or Les Mis Jr with the idea of trying to make the shows more appropriate. I say go for it if you don't mind working with a lot of kids! I know you won't regret it.
PS. I believe Daddy Warbucks has a new song in there (not sure if it's in the stage version because I saw the stage version when i was about 6) called You Won't Be An Orphan For LongCatherine currently: Babette/silly girl #1 BATB next: audition for Chicago!

Re:Annie, Jr. - 2008/03/21 12:06Well, you bring up a good point, Triplethreat. The show is being staged by Gymkhana, a company that teaching gymnastics to (mostly) little girls.
The audition listing says "ages 6 - 17". I e-mailed the director and said "if you don't get anyone intereresting for Warbucks, I would love to be considered". He e-mailed me back and said "that sounds like a possibiltie can you come out to the casting call so we can meet? (sic)"
This is in light of the fact that I heard of a university that is near me who intended to do Annie, but had to change their mind because the touring company wouldn't release the rights.
I want to do the show, but I don't want to look like a big goof either.
Any further thoughts?
BTW, the link you included was broken.

Re:Annie, Jr. - 2008/03/21 20:24It is my understanding that re-done scripts with the name "Jr." attached to the show is only suppose to be produced by schools and community theatre's that do student / youth productions - i.e. children, high school and young college age productions. I heard there was an age limit on them. They are rewritten specifically for that age range. I was told that these shows are not allowed to be done by regular adult community theatre groups. The producers who get the rights to the shows have to confirm that it is only being performed by youth groups. Otherwise, they are suppose to use the regular versions of the show.
I'm sure that there have been some "Jr." productions done out there where they brought in some adults - but, they aren't suppose to.

Re:Annie, Jr. - 2008/03/22 17:28Thanks Triplethreat and Jbug for your counsel. That is what is great about this web site; the fact that I can get clarification about aspects of this industry. There are more things that I don't know than that I do, and I am sure there are things that I don't even know I don't know.
The director did e-mail me twice, once to say "come to the audition and talk to me" and once more to say "come to either of the two auditions", so maybe I will just show up and tell him that I don't want to look foolish, nor do I want to make him look foolish and I that I have trepidations about taking a part away from a kid, but I do want to play the role, and if he can see around all of that, I will accept the role and thank him for his decision by working really hard for him.
