Jack in Into the Woods - 2008/03/20 01:35 I was recently cast as Jack in Into the Woods, however, going through the music I've noticed that the songs are really hard to sing, because of the rhythmn. Can you give me any tips on learning those, memorizing lines, and Giants in the Sky? Jack is supposed to be a Tenor, and I'm a Baritone. I can hit that F sharp in Giants in the Sky but it doesn't sound good and I sometimes crack, but Giants in the Sky is high and fast. What should I Do?

Re:Jack in Into the Woods - 2008/03/20 13:27 Are you going to have live music played during the show or is it prerecorded? If it is live, see if you can get the musical director to transpose the music down to a lower key register for you. Then it will be in a more comfortable singing range for you. This is done all the time! This can be alot of work for the musical director and they may not want to do it, or they may not have the ability / training to transpose. It depends on your musical director and his/her abilities and how much time he or she has. Really talk to your director and music director about getting the key changes done to the score of the show for you. Perhaps there is someone else who can do it for the music director. Not only do they have to change the piano score - they have to change the music of all the other instrumentalists who might be playing in your orchestra. That means writing all the music out note for note! It can be alot of work if you have many musicians in your orchestra.

If the music is a prerecorded digital, CD, or whatever and played over the sound system - you may not be able to do much. Working with a good voice teacher might help you to hit those notes. I have known many Baritones who, with good teachers, grew up to be tenors!

As for learning the lines / songs / and rhythm, all you need is practice, practice, practice!!!!! You'll be fine.

Re:Jack in Into the Woods - 2008/03/20 13:32 First of all Congratulations of being cast as Jack!
It's one of my dream roles.

You need to really be using your falsetto if your uncomfortable singing above F sharp. Is the only thing i can really suggest. And/or you could lower some of the higher notes in the other songs.

Also if you have a voice teacher or even a choral director that can help you I would go to them and ask for help with the rythmic things.

AND study! study! study! To learn your lines is all you can do, just make sure you squeeze in time to memorize even when your really busy.

Hope I helped a little
