Musicals For High School - 2008/02/16 18:31 Hey, I'm new here, but I'm a long time musical theater fan. I'm a senior looking to do a benefit play to raise money for a neighboring and in-need school district. I'm looking to present the idea to my principal, but I can't decide which play to do. I want something that people will want to come see.

I'm thinking about:

Urinetown
Mamma Mia (I think it's possible to get the awesome dancers needed)
Aida
A Chorus Line
West Side Story
Kiss Me Kate (Once again, it's opera style, so I don't know)
The Music Man
Spamalot (this is the show I know the least about, but it looks like a lot of fun)
Little Shop of Horrors

Some of the shows might be out of the question due to budget and such. I know I don't want to put on a show that will cost over 5,000. Once I decided on the show I want to set up a budget that I can present to my principal. Any suggestions on new shows, information on these shows or tips are totally welcome. I need all the help I can get.

Re:Musicals For High School - 2008/02/16 19:38 I'm not sure about Mamma Mia and Spamalot. Both are still on Broadway...so... Upcoming: ??? (You Can't Take It With You) Auditions are coming up.
Currently: Starting School

Re:Musicals For High School - 2008/02/16 20:44 Any show currently on Broadway is pretty much off limits.

Also, any show that RECENTLY became available to community groups will be more expensive in terms of royalties than a show than has been available for a while. If you are looking to raise money, you are likely better off to choose an older show. I suggest you research what shows are available to you first, and create a list to narrow down from there.

Before making a proposal to your principal, you need to make sure that the show you want to do is available, and make sure that you have a backup show chosen in case you should be denied the rights for some reason.

Also, make sure that you look into what shows may have been performed in your community in the recent past - you don't want to do a show that people in your area have already seen.

Re:Musicals For High School - 2008/02/16 23:50 Yeah, I definitely tried to keep that in mind. I know recently The Pajama Game, Beauty and the Beast and Annie Get Your Gun were all performed.

I would do Anything Goes, but it's being done currently. I like your idea about a back up play, I didn't even think of that.

The one I really want to do is either Aida or Urinetown -- Urinetown is more upbeat and fun, and I think more people would want to come to that. It's only been available for a little while though I think, it can't be long, so the royalties would be higher up.

Realistically, I think the shows we can pull off according to budget and talent are:

Aida

A Chorus Line

West Side Story

The Music Man

There's probably more that I'm not thinking about, though.

Re:Musicals For High School - 2008/02/22 16:22 You might also want to think about your budget for staging and which shows call for serious sets - also, what your costume resources are, who you can borrow from, etc.
You'll make a lot more on a fundraiser if you can keep those kinds of costs down, and it's not too early to start talking to local businesses about deals you can get (for example, free tuxes from a menswear store) because you're doing it as a fundraiser.
Current Production: Cedar Rapids Symphony Follies 2008: Oscar, Tony and Emmy and A Circle Full of Stars Gala concert

Upcoming Auditions: Godspell

Re:Musicals For High School - 2008/02/24 12:26 SInce it is a fundraiser the point is to get as many people to come and donate as possible. THat's why I'm gonna suggest West Side Story. It's guaranteed to be a great seller and everybody loves it. It can be designed pretty simply too. -Georgia

Current Show: West Side Story - Clarice
Recent Shows: Carousel - Principal Dancer, Ensemble, A Christmas Carol - Lily, Charwoman, Charitable Gentleman, Principal Dancer, Ensemble; Rootabaga Stories-multiple roles; Joseph... Dreamcoat -Wives Chorus

Re:Musicals For High School - 2008/02/24 18:06 I think something like Music Man or West Side Story is a good choice because people know it and they are classics. I am also pretty sure they both can have simple sets and costumes. Hope this helps! Favorite Shows: POTO, Wicked, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Legally Blonde, Hairspray, BATB, Music Man and more!

Currently in: R&H's Cinderella as a Stepsister!

Re:Musicals For High School - 2008/03/02 16:03 Even if production rights to Wicked were available, the budget would be too sky high for a high school... Especially seeing as how it's a fundraiser. I'd say A Chorus Line is your best bet. It's a show that you can get pretty minimal.
