Highschool Shows (UGH) - 2008/02/13 19:21I need a mini rant, I hope this is the appropriate board for it: I know many of you are probably professionals, but I'm a junior in high school. Right now I'm Little Becky in Urinetown, even though I'm a soprano (sad lack of belt ) And so Snuff That Girl's been tough for me, because it's an awkward part in my range. Anyways, I've been doing pretty well with it - it sounds angry, not so much pretty as powerful and I was happy with how I was doing, especially because belting has been a challenge for me. And today, I find out that these catty high school girls who've never done theater in their lives are saying that they could do much better.
Has this ever happened to you? In a high school show or otherwise? I can't stand how cutthroat some of these people are. They'll do anything to upstage everyone else, and that's not how a good show is put together. I love Urinetown, but this is ruining the show for me. Both the director and musical director are quite happy with my performance, but sometimes it's your peers' judgement that's more damaging than that of your superiors. Thoughts? Similar experiences?

Re:Highschool Shows (UGH) - 2008/02/13 19:33I'm sorry to say that witchy divas come with the territory in a buisness like theatre. It is totally cliche, but those girls are definiatly jelous that you got a sweet part in a musical as great as Urinetown, and they got nothing.
Don't worry too much about your range and problems with Snuff That Girl, every audience loves a character, no matter how poorly acted, if they put in a lot of heart and a lot of energy. And it sounds like you are doing both. Remember, you were cast for a reason

Re:Highschool Shows (UGH) - 2008/02/13 19:36Don't let them get to you! After all, YOU got the role, the director thought you were talented. I am in middle school and girls can just be sooooooooo mean and annoying. I have had girls be jealous of me and talk behind my back, the thing is they have low self esteem (and many times NO talent) and so they have to put other people down. Just keep on trying your hardest and show them you ARE talented!!! -Laura
Favorite Musical: PHANTOM OF THE OPERA!!!!!!! As for more "happy" musicals i like BATB, Music Man, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and Singin' in the rain!!!
Next production: R&H Cinderella?

Re:Highschool Shows (UGH) - 2008/02/14 00:43My highschool's shows are casted solely on politics and seniority so the shows usually ALWAYS end up bad unless the upperclassmen happen to be talented. It's pretty disgusting.
The saddest fact is that none of my peers that end up in the shows even plan on making a career for themselves as performers although if their talented that doesnt mean they shouldn't have a fair opportunity at a role.
& theirs always that really un-talented senior trying to talk about how much better they are than everyone *rolls eyes*
However, don't let your "peers" effect your performance, because what it comes down to is jealousy and thats all it is. A large ammount of my school's chamber is quite jealous of the fact that I'm a better singer, and actor.
But some people have not worked nearly as hard to get as good as you probably are, honestly its easier to criticize than it is to actually get on stage and do what we do honey.
p.s: Some people would fight hard to watch you fall, don't let them. Name: Bruce Current Production: None. Upcoming Auditions:
The Butler Did It Singing (Chandler)

Re:Highschool Shows (UGH) - 2008/02/25 22:58They are just jealous. Forget them. They are nothing. In H.S. just concentrate on your job in the show. Remember, some people have to put other people down to build themselves up. Even big famous stars get made fun of. Why do you think some famous folks have drinking, drug or eating disorders. They feel they have to be perfect all the time. You will never be perfect. As an actor, you will always see others who are better, prettier, sing better, act better, dance better, have better bodies, etc., etc., etc. YOU have to be strong and tough, or you will end up with problems. I remember being with a well known actor many years ago. We were with a big group and went out one night. This actor was in a huge t.v. series that was popular and ran for many years. These other guys at another table were laughing and making fun of him within our hearing distance. They were totally rude. We had to just sit there and listen. It was really embarrassing for him. We couldn't start a fight or anything. Other actors face the same thing. People are so rude, mean and jealous. It is part of the territory. If you can't live with it now, don't do theatre. I bet those girls can't sing or have the nerve to get up in front of people and do what you do. Turn the other cheek, have a stiff upper lip and be proud of what you do. Your voice has many years to improve along with your acting and other talents. Keep training and you will be a stronger person for all of this.

Re:Highschool Shows (UGH) - 2008/02/29 14:45Little Sally is a fantastic role. But high schools always have those types of people in them. Just give them a reason TO be jealous. There's a reason you got the part, and a reason they didn't.~ Kaitlin ~ Always Rockin The Boat ~
