Losing Weight - 2008/01/15 17:52 Okay,If you haven't already read my many posts about fame,I'm in it,today,we were doing a scene and the girl who's supposed to be horrendously overweight's lines go something like "Oh God,155 pounds?the scale must be broken this body is retainin' more water than the titanic."

this upset me deeply.

I weight about 5 pounds more than that. But you wouldn't belive that if I showed a full body picture of myself, for a lot of my weight is in my muscualr dance-legs of DOOM!People say I have a 'theatre body" with curves in the right places ....So my Question for you is has anyone sucessfully lost say 20 pounds a really good way?Eating less and exercising doesn't work, because sheesh,i get home from rehearsal and I'm famished and I'll eat about anything!

help?!?

Re:Losing Weight - 2008/01/15 18:10 Well, I used to weight 160 and now i have lost exactly 20 lbs! It took a while though (about 4 months). I lost the weight by eating less and exercising because that it is really the only healthy way to do it. if most of your weight is muscles, i wouldn't worry too much. You have to take into consideration that weight is not the most important number, BMI (Body mass index) is important (you can find BMI calculators on the internet) and the size of your waist is also an important number. Weight is not very accurate.
Just remember you should lose weight so you will feel healthier! So do it the healthy way. There is alot of great health sites about weightloss, you might want to search for (some talk more about BMI and waist size). Hope this helps!!!

Re:Losing Weight - 2008/01/15 18:22 If you're really serious about doing this you're going to have to make some changes.

If the weight is in your muscle then I would consult a personal trainer about how to go about losing muscle without adding fat.

As far as eating less, maybe it's not about less, but rather what you are eating. Portion out single servings and then put the box/bag back in the cupboard, and cut out excess sugar and saturated fats. Drinking water/staying hydrated helps with weight loss. My weakness is my occasional chocolate bar and cherry coke cravings. To help with this I keep a bag of miniature candy bars, not fun or regular size, and the 8oz cans of pop on hand. This way when I have a strong craving I'll eat/drink one. Obviously you have to have self control for that to work. A lot of the things you like to snack on may be available in healthier options.

Re:Losing Weight - 2008/01/15 19:02 You are young, I wouldn't worry too much.

The biggest question is if you are satisfied with how you look. Don't worry about how many pounds you weigh - as you said, you've a lot of muscle mass.

BMI is actually not all that accurate, either, actually. Go by inches and how much you jiggle.

Height will also factor into your overall weight, as well as how well endowed you are. The taller you are, the more you will weigh, if you are in proportion.

The way I read that line, it sounds like the character is expecting the scale to read more than 155. That might just be me.
But is the character actually "horrendously overweight", or just big for a dancer? Ballet dancers especially are expected to have an extremely slender build, not to mention be the correct height, weight and age. If they aren't, they will not get work as a ballerina. It's a very image based field and a lot of professional ballerinas have eating disorders.
There is also the possibility that this character thinks of herself as "horrendously overweight". Many girls, performers especially, are under this delusion when they actually look fine. And for that matter, how tall is she supposed to be? And overweight by whose definition?

What it comes down to is: are you healthy? Do you have an active lifestyle and healthy diet, or do you sit on your couch all day and eat junk food? That's what you should be concerned with, not how much you actually weigh.

Re:Losing Weight - 2008/01/15 19:26 I agree with those above me- you should only lose weight in a healthy way.

A friend of mine reduced how much red meat she ate when I told her that I do that as well and that helped her lose a few pounds- no red meat means that you can't gobble down any burgers! I'm vegetarian for animal rights reasons, but it can also help you live a healthy lifestyle if you're super-careful and be sure to get your protein.

It helps me to get rid of the snack foods in the house and replace it with other foods- bananas, FiberOne bars, and cheese and crackers instead of junk food and juice or Vitamin Water instead of sodas.

I only weigh 105 pounds and I'm 5'6". My general costuming measurements are 32, 24, 32. And yet some people littler than I am are still obsessed with weighing less- don't get caught in that body image trap, I'd kill for a 'theatre body'!

Re:Losing Weight - 2008/01/15 20:52 I certainly hope that this particular line is not what is prompting you to think about losing weight.

As others have said, weight is not a good indicator of HEALTH, which is what you should be concerned with first and foremost. Take a good look at your eating and exercising habits, and see if there is anything that should be changed in order for you to be more healthy. A really effective thing to do is to write down everything you eat for a week. I tried this once and I found that I stopped eating junk because writing it down would force me to admit that I ate it.

If you are healthy, then stop using a scale! Who cares what number? Sometimes ignorance really is bliss.

if you are not happy with the way you look, even though you have a healthy lifestyle, then you need to look at why you are unhappy with yourself.

Re:Losing Weight - 2008/01/15 21:02 Yea, it's a bit sensitive for me too.
Considering that I'm pretty sure that the show I'm doing right now, I would've gotten the lead if I was 1) African American, 2) overweight although I don't necessarily look it.

But the other Frederic compared to me... yea.

I keep trying to find something that works for me and it's just so hard ya know? It's normal what your feeling but if your comfortable with you thats all that matters.

Re:Losing Weight - 2008/01/15 21:13 yeah,I don't like feel bad but it's like the little things like understuding for Carmen, her dance for there she goes includes shoulder lifts and other cute things....my teacher says "I'll have to come up with something different for you..."

but I just found out...the real carmen is suffereng from an eating disorder....so in this case,I'd rather be 'pleasingly plump' and not do lifts than be her and be suffering for looking 'right'

I'd like to say,THANKS

Re:Losing Weight - 2008/01/15 21:25 Now is a good time to remember that when Barbra Streisand auditioned for the show that was her "big break" the director told the casting director "I don't put ugly girls in my shows". (That was before he heard her sing)

I bet no one would dare say that about her now!

Jennifer Grey got a nose job and it ruined her career.

So when you start out, it may feel like you don't "fit" the roles you're going for. But someday, if you keep on being your own wonderful self, they'll start making the roles fit you.

Don't try to please others, or you'll never please yourself.

Re:Losing Weight - 2008/01/15 22:14 Great, great point.

Courtney, this is turning into one of those girls bathroom conversations: 'ugh, my nose is horrible'. 'You rnose is adorable! Mine is huge.' etc etc

See, your measurements (though we shouldn't go by numbers alone) prove that you have actual muscles, which are more important for dancers to be able to do complex routines, and that your body is perfectly normal for someone of your height (I saw your resume on the blogs)

I have a fantastic idea. We should throw a virtual sleepover party with Spice Girls music, chick flicks and cookie dough! That's the mood I'm in. Who's with me!

Re:Losing Weight - 2008/01/16 00:38 All this said about self-esteem and necessity, if you want to get healthier, I'd be willing to have another fitness buddy. I had another one on here, but he was a guy and not nearly as into it as I was.

I've lost about 25 pounds in the past year by watching portions and eating (mostly) real food. Having somone to report to and keep things reasonable helps as much, if not more, than journaling.

Little things like learning to love water and being able to cook whole, nutritious, quick foods makes a world of difference. You'll just feel better.

Re:Losing Weight - 2008/01/16 15:31 http://www.geocities.com/sheridanacts/beforeandafter.html

I used to be obese when I was 11. I was 4'9 and weighed 130 lbs. Now I'm 13, 5'2 and weigh 95 lbs. I went from a size 9/10 or 11/12 to a size 0/1. It took about 1-1/2 years of eating healthfully.

My mom joined Weight Watchers & they have this plan called the Core Plan where you can eat as much as you need from a list of foods and put my whole family on it. There is no weighing or measuring & you don't have much to track.

Even after my mom quit the program (for lack of money) we all kept eating the same way at home. It's all about substituting healthy stuff for unhealthy stuff. Like we eat whole grain pasta instead of white, brown rice instead of white & etc. Fat free instead of whole fat anything. And a lot of fruits, vegetables & skim milk & lean proteins.

A lot of people think I'm skinny now but if they saw how much quantity and quality I eat they would be amazed. I eat a LOT but I eat healthy stuff & I'm never hungry. Plus it tastes good & I rarely miss any of the junk I used to eat & everybody is jealous of my nearly perfect skin.

The plan is about eating foods that are higher in fiber but lower in calories so that you feel full on less calories and so you lose weight easily. I've been taking my lunch to school for about 1-1/2 years, my mom makes breakfast & dinner out of the list of core ingredients (and there are a LOT of core ingredients) and snacks are mostly fresh fruit, 94% fat free popcorn & stuff like that.

We really recommend it. Here is my before photo & you can see my after photos in my profile.

My doctor was thrilled and my health is much better. I played volleyball and basketball this year & work out at a fitness center.

Another bonus is I get A LOT better parts in plays than I used to because now I look more like the way directors want!

It's very possible to eat healthy and lose weight but it takes time and a lot of patience. Any diet that promises you will drop 10 lbs in 10 days is going to be bad for you.

The best way is to make healthy changes to your lifestyle, stop eating so much junk food & start making healthier choices on a daily basis until that becomes a permanent habit.

I'm living proof it works
