Re:Bye Bye Birdie - 2008/01/11 09:37
I was just cast in Bye Bye Birdie recently. However, it was for a theatre that prefers to have people sing songs from the show they are casting so I wound up singing "An English Teacher". I did the last verse of the song and it went really well. They also had us do cold readings from the script. We read the first scene between Albert and Rosie.
I also helped assistant director the show a few years ago and we heard a lot of different audition pieces. The best were songs that were more from the ealry 60's rock/pop shows. There were dance auditions as well since there is a good amount of dancing in the show, especially for Rosie with some for Albert and the teenagers. Cold readings are important for all the teenage parts too, because it is important to see how everyone carries themselves and the lines. The teenagers are really, really head over heels in love with Conrad Birdie and that really has to show.
It is definitely a fun show to do. It has good songs, comic dialogue and memorable characters. There is so much you can do with this show. For the most part, costumes are fairly easy and colorful. Sets don't have to be insanely elaborate or anything. I would suggest your school look into the show, and if you want a better idea watch one of the movies like MCme suggested. The 1995 version with Vanessa Williams seems to fairly close to the script but the added some new songs.
