Theatre Camp for Adults - 2008/01/03 21:25 Being a high school teacher, I have a lot of time off. Most of my family and friends are NOT teachers, SOO while I have 2 weeks off at Christmas time, I spend a lot of time killing time, waiting for family and friends to get home from work. When they do, they are tired and have to rest up for work the next day. I know it sounds like the kind of "trouble" that more people would like to have, but it can be a drag.

I am wondering how practical it would be to create theatre camps for people who aren't 12 to 17 years old. How many other ADULTS (especially middle school/high school teachers) would LOVE to take stage combat classes, or inprov classes or make-up classes or theatre dancing classes or ALL of these classes during those weeks and weeks off? As a bonus, maybe teachers could even get CPDUs for these classes (teachers know what they means).

Any thoughts?

Re:Theatre Camp for Adults - 2008/01/03 23:29 I think it would be wonderful to have that opportunity. I fell out of that age group a few years ago and I can't find ANY thing to help me gain experience in friggin southern Indiana. I've gone a semester at the local college to try out their theatre program...omg it's horrible. The talent is there, but jeez the teachers don't have a clue what they're doing. There's one theatre that does community theatre. There are no professional theatres. That means, if i don't get a part in one show, I have nothing else to do for 2 more months until the auditions for the next show. I'm averaging about a show a year...and that's crappy when you're trying to gain experience. I've looked into dance classes, but because I'm an adult I can't find anything. Nothing has the serious nature I want in a dance class. They're all belly-dancing classes for exercise or ballroom so you can look good at your wedding reception. Nothing that's competitive or even has a recital type thing to encourage good performance.

I may not know what a CPDU is, but I know exactly what you're talking about when it comes to adult classes.

Re:Theatre Camp for Adults - 2008/01/03 23:55 CPDU = Continung Professional Development Units. Teacher are required to get a certain number of them every year (at least in Illinois). It is SUPPOSED to keep a teacher from teaching the same lesson from 1963.

Re:Theatre Camp for Adults - 2008/01/04 09:00 What a great idea! I struggle with dancing---I think if I had some instruction and practice (as a 46 year old adult), I would have more confidence in auditions. Just knowing some of the terminology would be helpful.

All of the dancing classes in my area are for children or teenagers or adults who have dance training.

The choreographer of our theater company is trying to persuade the head of the company to offer a theater dance for adults class in the evenings. I told him I would be the first to sign up.

Our company is very education oriented towards children. Wouldn't it be great if they extended that philosophy to adults?

Good thinking!

Re:Theatre Camp for Adults - 2008/01/05 00:44 Wanna hear what we did? After "The Wizard of Oz" was over, the one woman asked the choreographer if she would give us tap lessons if she would get a half dozen of us together. So, we rent a rehearsal hall in the falling-down building and we take tap lessons on Tuesday night.
Buying the tap shoes was a little awkward. I had to make my way past 300 8-year-old girls to get fitted.

It is very frustrating. I get e-mails all the time from "this production company" or "that production company" saying they have classes and workshops and seminars for 12 to 18 year old students (???). It seems like they are missing a target audience, but maybe not.

Re:Theatre Camp for Adults - 2008/01/05 01:13 I hear you on the dance training! We have summer workshops for the other things, but the only adult dance class I could get into was an exercise/jazz class. It was awful. The instructor is in great shape and she expected us beginners to keep up with her. Everyone I knew from the summer theatre group we worked with her through quit after two-three weeks because it was ridiculously difficult.

Too bad we don't all live in the same community
