Shows you couldn't be in - 2007/12/25 19:22While I was watching The Sound of Music yesterday and I kept thinking, God I could not play anyone in this. I don't have anything against it, but I couldn't ever be in it. Does any one else have a show that they couldn't do not because they don't like it but for other reasons? Why? For me I could never do: -The Sound of Music (way too sweet for me and I would never be able to be either a sweet Austrian child or a nun, No one who knows me would buy it.) -West Side Story (I would never get cast as being Puerto Rican because I'm blonde and so fair skinned and I'm not a good enough dancer for ensemble.Pity. i love the show) There's a few more but I can't think of the right now. Oh and by the way, Merry Christmas!--Ashley-- Current Production: Nothing right now! Upcoming Auditions: "The Children's Hour", "On The Razzle", "The Wizard Of Oz", "Blood Brothers", "Hamlet"(Auditioning for Ophelia!!!!!) Dream Roles: Rizzo "Grease", Fantine "Les Miserables", Ms. Lovett "Sweeney Todd", Gwendolen "The Importance of Being Ernest" , Ophelia "Hamlet", Cherie "Bus Stop", Mama Rose "Gypsy",

Re:Shows you couldn't be in - 2007/12/25 23:52HAHA. I actually couldn't be in sound of music because well *points to profile picture* Fiddler on the roof as well.
It's hard enough getting roles that arent just character roles being an african american tenor oh isn't very conventional looking.Name: Bruce Current Production: None. Upcoming Auditions:
The Butler Did It Singing (Chandler)

Re:Shows you couldn't be in - 2007/12/26 20:35heh, I couldn't ever be in West Side Story, for obvious reasons- I am white, and I am not a guy, and I am not trained in doing ballet whilst engaging the Jets in rumbles....it's a beautiful show, though.
The Fantasticks- actually a community theatre group is doing this now, and my friend got the part of Luisa. I could never do it because she's the only girl role in the show and that takes a killer voice that I currently do not possess. (sp? I think I put in too many 's's)
I'm surprised no one has said High School Musical- my head would explode if I did it, even though it's been said that the stage version is more bearable. HSM is really the only thing besides genocide that I can't stand in this world. -Ali
Currently: -Sheila; Boys Next Door (postshow depression mode) -acceptance to acting ensemble -Bye Bye Birdie (audition- didn't get a callback)

Depending on how diverse your community is, a lot of theatres will not cast based on race. I have done quite a lot of ethnic roles over my short acting career: Burmese, Mexican, now Tonkinese (for one scene only, but I need to have this tan on regardless in order not to glow under lights and look mostly believable for that one scene...) and will be Japanese for my next show in two months. I am super-duper European and look sickly pale in my every day life. If I wasn't a brunette I'd look like an albino, and am so pale that I can't tan or burn no matter how much sun I get. Not exaggerating. Neo-Strata is really good stuff, I recommend it, though I'm not sure if it's available outside of Canada.
We're potentially doing West Side Story at my community theatre next Christmas. I am going out for Maria and will not let my paleness be a factor, and neither will the audition panel since we're not a very ethnic community and even less so with actors. Don't let skin colour discourage you from auditioning for shows! You never know what the director is thinking! You just have to be willing to alter your appearance come show time, be it with a wig or dying your hair and "tanning".
To answer the original question.. Probably CATS, unless I played Grizabella, because I just don't have the dance skills. Nor would I look good in a body stocking (though I am working on that! Hooray for my new exercise bike!). I have seen how hard those dancers work though, holy man...Kathleen Sera Current Shows: Aloha Pinafore - Volga Upcoming Auditions: Crazy For You - Irene Roth

Re:Shows you couldn't be in - 2007/12/27 14:14This just in- my community theatre is thinking about doing The Wiz, which is a soulful version of the wizard of oz written for african american actors, and we're advertising it as the 'New York Soul' version instead of the 'African' version. Whatever we end up doing, it should be cool!-Ali

Re:Shows you couldn't be in - 2007/12/29 23:01I could never be in Legally Blonde because i'm not blonde, and i loved the show in NYC. Also, Little Shop of Horrors (funny, i'm in the chorus for that right now) because i'm no soprano like Audrey and the Urchins are usually african americans, which i am not. and i love that show....
also, The Producers because i'm not a little old lady, a man, or a swedish blonde knockout.... okay, so i am swedish, but not blonde. ...as i pointed out earlier. but it IS one of my favorite shows... up with about fifty million others, but oh well.
other i'm no soprano, which means i'm doomed to feisty sidekicks with no romance (for most shows, when you think about it. especially older ones) and harmonies...~ Kaitlin ~ Always Rockin The Boat ~
Favorite Shows: Young Frankenstein, Curtains, Little Shop of Horrors, The Producers Dream Roles that I have NO CHANCE of Getting Because of Something i Have no control over: Ulla from the Producers or Inga from Young Frankenstein (neither tall nor blonde - such a shame too, because this is one of my favorite "character roles" to play), Igor from Young Frankenstein (i'm no man, no matter how many times i play one), Gary Coleman from Avenue Q (skin color) SEEING ON MARCH 29TH ON BROADWAY - YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN ^^ AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Re:Shows you couldn't be in - 2007/12/30 03:19Well, newer shows have more parts for altos/mezzos and fewer for sopranos. Unfortunately for me, since I am a legit soprano most comfortable singing in head voice!
So - I could never be in a show that requires belting, or one that requires good dancing (I'm not a dancer). That rules out a lot of modern shows, but yes, A Chorus Line would be one I couldn't ever have a part in

Re:Shows you couldn't be in - 2008/01/03 20:56* Any role in Godspell (I am too old) * Horton in Seussical (I am too old) * Any role in Rent (I am too old)
(This "getting old" thing is a little bit of a stigma!)
Well, I guess I have to keep my eyes open for "Daddy Warbucks", "Henry Higgins" and "Emile de Becque" auditions!

actually couldn't be in sound of music because well *points to profile picture* Fiddler on the roof as well.
Our company has a color-blind casting policy
When we did "Fiddler on the Roof" we only had one African American in the cast, a wonderful actor who was Perchik.
When Perchik comes to Anatevka to stir up revolutionary trouble, one of the men actually says something like "You're not from around here, are you?" We always thought that was funny.
So, as katoru says, anything is possible!

(This "getting old" thing is a little bit of a stigma!)
In my area, being middle aged is a great asset! The majority of people auditioning for shows are in their 20s or 30s, so the competition is not as great.
There are so many great roles for older people. In addition to the ones you mentioned, think about Lazar Wolf or Tevye in "Fiddler," Scrooge or Marley in "A Christmas Carol," Don Quixote or the Padre in "Man of LaMancha," Mr. Sowerberry, Mr. Bumble, or Fagin in "Oliver!," Father or Grandfather in "Ragtime," or Belle's father, Maurice in "Beauty and the Beast."
Keep looking, those roles are out there!
