"Homosexual Sensibility"? - 2006/11/07 23:14 Exerpt from this article:

Musicals with a Homosexual Sensibility: The Example of Mame

Although most Broadway musicals feature homosexual involvement in their creation and performance, some shows more than others may be said to have a "homosexual sensibility." For instance, Herman's Mame (1966) may be said to be a "gay" musical with its fanciful period costumes, elaborate wigs, and bitchy dialogue (which found its way into at least one song, "Bosom Buddies"), and friendship between two women, Mame and Vera. Mame and Vera are less the drag queens they are sometimes accused of being than women who speak their minds.

This is an extremely detailed 4 page article on the role of homosexuality in musical theatre - if you're extremely "right wing" you might not appreciate this but I think it's interesting, although I'm not sure I agree with all of it. Some of it seems to be reading a little too much into things.

Re:"Homosexual Sensibility"? - 2006/11/08 01:34 i found it pretty interesting. a little stereotypical, maybe... and made me feel a little stupid.. lol... i never really read that much homosexuality into the character of reno sweeney regardless of cole porter's sexual orientation!! oh, well... i guess that's the beauty of free speech and being able to analyze literature. They call me Jessica (like: They call me lady luck... lol)

Favorite roles:

Eva Peron, Evita; Jack's Mother, Into the Woods; Sonia, Godspell; Anything Goes, Reno Sweeney; Audrey, Little Shop of Horrors; Catherine, Pippin

Re:"Homosexual Sensibility"? - 2006/12/29 18:50 That article is kinda kaka if you ask me. LOL

I loved musical theatre before I ever knew what Gay was!

And here is another question, think of all the movies and musicals, plays etc that have gay characters. THEY ALWAYS DIE!!! (other than la cage)

Even in RENT! (OK one lives - whoo hoo!)

Granted Gay people do tend to see the world through different eyes. But I have never thought of MAME as a gay or gay themed show? That is a bit of a leap if you ask me.

Next year we are doing THRILL ME - if you haven't heard of it check it out. It is a dark deeply disturbing two man musical.
Talk about pulling TEETH to allow it to be done in redneckville in the Black Box experiemental stage... but it is worth doing.

To me, it is time someone writes a gay character that isn't camp and doesn't have messed up morals or AIDS.

I just saw the movie "The Family Stone" - and for once - the most down to earth, well adjusted and loving couple in the whole show was the gay couple! About time.
(of course the son was deaf and gay and was in an interacial relationship) but it worked.
Currently Directing -
Sweeney Todd (March 2008)

Currently In - Jan 11 - Feb 3 2008
Moonlight And Magnolias - Ben Hecht (non musical)
