me singing "on my own" from les mis - 2007/12/17 15:33 Okay, there is no backing track and if someone had one, that would be swell. My friend has one but I'm not sure if she can get to it. I don't know. Anyway, I'd like a little feedback. Two people have said I sound good but you know, most people don't think they sound amazing. *sigh*

Anyway, here it is. Just don't kill me and I know there are some mess ups.

Re:me singing "on my own" from les mis - 2007/12/17 16:08 I have to say I didn't listen to the whole thing as I am not currently at home and am using dialup access.

Congrats on being brave enough to post a recording! It is a scary thing to put yourself out there, especially for people you don't know.

It sounds a bit as if you are mixing your speaking/singing voices, which is a useful technique for certain times but shouldn't be used constantly. I would recommend that you work on your breathing technique, if you are not doing so already. There is a beginner's guide to breathing on this site under tips if you are interested. This should help you fully commit to your voice.

Once you have some strong breath support under you, you'll be able to tackle other things such as resonance placement.

Are you currently studying with a vocal instructor?

Re:me singing "on my own" from les mis - 2007/12/17 16:39 You have a pretty voice. What I would suggest is working on your tone...it sounds nasal, and if you got rid of the nasal quality, I think it would open up the sound a lot more and sound nice (like I said, when you aren't nasal, your voice does sound pretty!). Also, you do seem to struggle on the higher parts of the song - does it feel natural for you to reach those notes, or does it feel like you're just barely getting there? If it's the latter, I'd recommend trying to work on head voice more before you attempt belt/mix songs like "On My Own."

Re:me singing "on my own" from les mis - 2007/12/17 16:56 I am not working with an instructor but I hope to be soon. I need to find a good one if the one at my school doesn't have the time. She works at school during study halls and after school with other people. But yeah, I'm working on getting one.

And my breathing is what I have some issues. And thanks. I'm going to go look at that, triplethreat. Thanks! =D

Shannon -

Awwh, thanks. That made my day brighter! =D

Yeah, when I listen to the recording, I realize how nasal I sound. D:

And about the higher parts, I feel as if I have to struggle just a little bit. It's more towards the end. But the ones that are like "all my life i've only been pretending" and "a world that's full of happiness that i have never known" are the ones I struggle with. the other ones, I think, feel natural.

But yeah, I'm really hoping to get a vocal instructor because I feel that with help, I'll improve. And thank you so much for he feedback. It really was a big help. =D

Re:me singing "on my own" from les mis - 2007/12/18 22:41 Well first of all, you have a beautiful tone to your voice. I would say that what would help is to get more breath support. Really breathe from deep within your diaphragm (at the bottom of your stomach) and push air with each phrase. Also, your voice sounded a little bit harsh and disconnected at times. On my Own is really a little bit more legato. Honestly, that's all technical stuff that a voice teacher could really help with, but you have the natural talent deifnitely
