Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/03/31 06:03 I love theatre but I HATE and i mean HATE, unnecessary typecasting.

Honestly, I understand someone needing to look the part depending on the situation and the show to an extent. But to us that to ground your ENTIRE basis of how your casting a show is digusting.

I mean honestly, if you can't act OR sing a role, better than your audition competitor and race or size isn't something completely pertaining to the character you shouldn't be cast. END.

Sorry about the rant ya'll that really irratates me though.

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/03/31 10:27 I hate it when you're new to a theatre and people who have been there a while are favored even though one of favorites might have the worst singing voice ever.

I know that's just how it goes but it still annoys me.

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/04/08 21:55 I hate it when people judge the quality of a performance on pictures they see of the show! This happens a lot online- never on this website, but I've seen it happen on others. Just because a theatre doesn't have the money to afford amazing sets or costumes doesn't mean the production was awful, and the best sets and costumes in the world aren't going to make terrible performers any better.

I also hate when people say that a certain character was 'miscast' based solely on pictures they see.

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/04/12 22:16 - hate these amazing performers (upperclassmen) who have amazing voices and act incredibly(talking about some specific person who got a callback to SA), but are real b*tches to everyone who isn't in their close circle of BFF's (mostly who are leads). The girl i'm talking about.... she was also the "head" of the drama club's NYC trip, and when voting on shows, she would only let everyone have two shows to pick (when nobody even knew about the shows). then, when people learned more about the shows, they wanted to change their vote, but she wouldn't let us.

and she acted like the chorus people in LSoH (including me) weren't there.

- hate when my school does a show i love and some lead butchers it (oh, Middle School Productions....Guys and Dolls.....Sky Masterson.....Pitchy....oh..)

- hate how i can't belt that high d..... sorry, just one of my things i love to rant about

- playing men... nothing i wear looks flattering on me. and all the costumes i wear, because of my.... woman ... my costumes make me look fatter on stage (i got told from someone that they thought the fat suit i wore during Guys and Dolls added to Nicely's character.... i didn't say anything.)

i wanna be a girl.

- only one guy in my grade who can sing... sure, there's some who can act... but only one can sing. and he can only act in say... two roles. because he acts like himself, which worked for Nathan Detroit, but not for much else.

- i'll keep doing this 'til someone stops me

- other ensemble members not trying at all
- other ensemble members not shutting up - even if they have nothing to do - when they're told to be quiet
- cast members laughing at the director's vision... even though it looks weird because he's a grown bald man trying to by sexy, what he's telling you to do will make the show BETTER
- people thinking i only think about Broadway... nobody (outside my circle of tight friends) seems to think they can talk to me about something other than musicals

i'll post some more in a few days, to spread the joy out over a couple days...
~ Kaitlin ~ Always Rockin The Boat ~

Favorite Shows: Young Frankenstein, Curtains, Little Shop of Horrors, The Producers
Dream Roles that I have NO CHANCE of Getting Because of Something i Have no control over: Ulla from the Producers or Inga from Young Frankenstein (neither tall nor blonde - such a shame too, because this is one of my favorite "character roles" to play), Igor from Young Frankenstein (i'm no man, no matter how many times i play one), Gary Coleman from Avenue Q (skin color)

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/04/13 21:07 I hate when there's too many people in the chorus when the show really only is about the leads. I'm in Grease right now and aside from the leads there is about 30 people in the chorus. When I saw the show on broadway over the summer there was only three guys and three girls in the chorus and one of the girls was Cha Cha. I cant even focus because there are so many people sitting in the audience during rehearsals. It feels like an actual show! --Ashley--
Current Production: "High School Musical" (Ms. Darbus)
Upcoming Auditions: "The Children's Hour"(Auditioning for Mary or Martha), "On The Razzle", "The Wizard Of Oz", "Blood Brothers", "Hamlet"(Auditioning for Ophelia!!!!!)

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/04/19 01:46 I can't stand having to share a dressing room with little kids. It's one thing when seniors are sharing with freshmen, especially if they're all chorus or something, but last year during Annie Jr. they made the orphans and the NYC people/maids share a dressing room. The orphans were horrible. They messed with all the props that had to be in there with us, spilled orange juice all over a couple costumes, spilled Sprite all over the counter and didn't clean it up or mention it so we could all step in it, and stole all sorts of hair ties socks, shoes, and who knows what else that we needed for our next scene. Not to mention they spilled popcorn all over the bathroom floor and stepped all over it so that it was all over the place...

This year in Beauty in the Beast one of the younger boys peed all over someone's costume, though, so I guess I can't complain too much.

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/04/28 16:13 Kids need to learn the eitquette because they are kids. At some point in time, none of us knew how we were supposed to behave backstage. I do think its up to those of us who are veterans to set high examples. Well, most of the time.

Unfortunately, many parents think their kids are being cute (and sometimes they are on stage) but don't realize there is certain behavior that needs to be followed backstage. Don't screw with the props, no matter how cool they are. Shut up. No, really. SHUT UP!

Which brings me to my biggest gripe: people who don't have the courtesy to be quiet backstage. Why these individuals think carrying on a conversation in a normal voice is okay is well beyond my comprehension.

I also have a complaints about stage crew who loiter when they aren't doing their job. Don't get me wrong: I love and appreciate most stage crew. But sometimes their butts are in the way and they make a quick change or entrance difficult at best.

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/04/28 17:51 My first pet pieve is when talented people are casted into the chorus of a show, and then drop because of it. Our school was luck enough to get the rights to Chicago, and I was amazed that in the very small percentage of people that got in who audition, people gave up that opportunity because they did not have a huge part.

Also, when novice actors decide that they have more authority and know better than the director. I don't mind if you are new, or have an idea, but do not undermine the talents and ability of the artistic staff.
Past Productions: Chicago (Ensemble)
Currently: Into the Woods (Little Red Ridinghood), Petite Rouge (Mama Duck)

I think he was seven. Too old to be pulling crap like that in my opinion. He got into a good deal of trouble for it though. It was so annoying though, because Zack (the person who was supposed to wear the costume that was peed on) almost didn't get to be in the scene (he was a dancer for 'Be Our Guest') but thankfully the cleaners got it done in time. (It was one day before opening when this happened. The director was furious.)

I understand that kids need to be taught etiquette, but seriously, some things are just common sense. (i.e. If you spill something, clean it up! or Pee in the toliet, NOT on things that people have to wear!!!) It's one thing when a kid forgets a stage whisper during dress. It's another when they almost ruin a costume. (Not speaking of that occurance in specific. We've had several close calls, and several kids who aren't allowed to be in next year's show.)

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2008/04/29 20:31 -STAGE MOMS!!!!
-People with "natural talent" who "never take lessons" and won't let you forget it
-Theater and director name-dropping...ugh...
-People who go to auditions for older shows with Hairspray or Wicked sheet music tucked under their arms
-Kids who aren't that into acting but do it because their parents make them (this is so sad!)
-Favoritism

OH! And I forgot--

-The people who came in drunk and let their cell phone ring about 10 TIMES throughout the show (for as long as it could ring each time), and burst into laughter every time it happened. Honest to God. Worst. Cell Phone use. Ever!
