Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2007/06/25 17:22 Oh yes, same here! Boys can be TERRIBLE and still get great parts because there are never enough of them. Girls have to be AWESOME to even get noticed!

Directors who cast favorites - hate that. Especially when the people they choose have no talent and they overlook people who are a lot better for the role.

Stage moms - most of the moms we know are great but there are one or two that are very annoying. Cannot talk about ANYTHING other than how WONDERFUL their kid is and it drives everybody else up the wall. It's bad for the kid, too, because she thinks her mom is right & acts all superior & she's not THAT great (can't tell I'm talking about someone in particular, can you?)

When people with no talent who are lazy & don't try very hard keep getting good parts over people who are talented & work their hineys off because their parents donate money and/or volunteer and/or are important people in the community, etc.
Favorite Shows: Once on this Island, Wicked, Hairspray, Legally Blonde
Dream Roles: Ado Annie/Oklahoma, Galinda/Wicked, Elle Woods/Legally Blonde
Favorite Role: Ti Moune in Once On this Island Jr
In Production: Best of Broadway Revue, Elle Woods/Legally Blonde

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2007/06/26 13:42 Styage Moms are the WORST!

when I was in Into the Woods I went into the audition for Little Red and I don't mean to brag, but it was flawless. My best audition yet. I was 13 at the time (petite for my age) and they ended up casting a 9, 10, and other 13 year old for the part (it was triple-casted, gotta love children's theater). They said they wanted to go younger and I guess the other 13 year old's mom complained. OY.

Biased directors are horrible though. when i was in Hello Dolly I was called back for Dolly and they ended up giving the part to the director's dughter (she's really more of a dancer than a singer/actress) and a girl who was WAY too young for the part and didnt know how to play older. However, her and the other Dolly had been friends since they were 2. fishy? very much so. that was one INTERESTING show.

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2007/06/26 20:40 ...people who screw up rehearsal. I don't mind people having fun. Just cracking up during rehearsal for no reason whatsoever, the jokes (of both the non- and practical varieties) and having a good time I like. But when rehearsal time is over and the director is yelling cuz ya got nothing done really, that annoys me. Name: Stefani

What, is there something in my teeth? Is my underskirt showing? All right, lets just get this over with. No, I am not seasick. Yes, I have always been green. No, I did not eat grass as a child - Elphaba

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2007/06/29 21:53 Popular people in highschool who can sing pop music very well, thus making the school think they should get leads in the shows.

Directors that take these opinions seriously. There is a difference between pop and showtunes. Grr.

yes, yes! This led to our choreographer for one company quitting and starting her own, way more sucessful company. The company she started has a permanent home with next to nothing rent, meaning they can give classes there and not have to preform in the park instead of a theater because they lost their funding... (had to use that smiley)

Currently:
-Sheila; Boys Next Door (postshow depression mode)
-acceptance to acting ensemble

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2007/07/29 21:03 I hate it when a director (such as my middle school one) does a show just because he has one favorite who would LOOK the part of the lead, not ACT or SING!

By the way this is happening because last year we did "Annie"; the girl who played Annie was a terrible actress and an okay singer. Now this year he is doing a play called "A Little Princess" because the girl who played Annie would look the part. The sad truth is she was an okay singer before but she ruined her voice (by trying to sing to loud) and she can't act.
Kaila, but you can call me Kay

Favorite role ever: Lily St. Regis (Annie)

I really hate how there are twice as many girls in the community childrens theatre and my school theatre. So boys get parts even if they aren't that good. Where a boy will have two people to compete with, a girl will have 10!

Boo!

I go to an all-girls school, so our school productions have...limited numbers of boys. our last musical had three boys. for our last play, our director kept telling us that we were gonna get boys, gonna get boys....no boys. we did And Then There Were None-- only male characters were Lombard and Marston and they were played by girls who were cast two weeks before the performance....

I hate it when people think that they're better than others. and I am guilty of this to a point (i'm not vocal about it, but there are people that i think i can sing better than), but I know people that are SO full of themselves its annoying...

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2007/08/14 14:33 I hate pre-casting. I just finished a community theatre show. One of the men in the show is directing the next show for that theatre. He has pre-cast his wife & son in 2 of the lead roles. Neither is talented. It's very wrong.

- 2007/08/26 14:50 I lost a role to the Director's Daughter once (School Play). And I saw her at callbacks- she was a fantastic singer, her voice was all wrong for the part and on top of that, she couldn't act for beans. I was pretty angry, because later I was talking to her and she seemed to think she got the part because she had god given talents. I haven't talked to her since that show. =/ Upcoming Auditions: Peter Pan
Last Show: Sweet Charity

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2007/08/26 15:26 I was running a crew one day and this girls stage mom walked in and started offering suggestions on how to "better" the scenery and show. When I told her they were pretty much set in stone she got really angry and indignant and said I should be more respectful. I assure you I was polite. We've had problems with her before. All the rehearsals/crews are closed to the public but she believes she has a right to be back there just because her perfect little daughter has a role.

Btw, her perfect little daughter is hated by the whole cast, incredibly mean, and believes she has god given talent that entitles her to a role over the really good females we have. So glad I've graduated...

And yes favoritism sucks...as did Zac Efron in HSM. Did he do the singing in Hairspray? I haven't seen it yet.
Hey, I'm Andrew. You are?

Current Auditions: The Importance of Being Earnest and Dog sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead.

Re:i love theater, but i hate.... - 2007/08/26 16:26 Zac Efron actually didn't sing in HSM (the first one); he was dubbed. He did his own singing in Hairspray, and he definitely wasn't bad.

And I hate theatre politics as well.

The younger end of my Honk! jr cast. We older ones were about to kill.

Besically my Secret Garden cast. Well, really only 2 people, and they got on track after the director FLIPPED OUT on them one night. And they deserved it.
