Re:Sweeney Todd trailer is released - 2007/10/04 22:18wow, i didn't think that they would be singing... not bad though. I've read somewhere that the girl who plays Joanna is like a prodigy, according to her voice teacher.
and darn... is it rated R? now i can't see it!! GAH!! well it actually looks pretty scary, and spider man made me wet my pants so....haha*´¨) ¸.•´¸.•*´¨) ¸.•*¨) (¸.•´ (¸.•´ Annie

Re:Sweeney Todd trailer is released - 2007/11/25 13:38i was so excited when i saw the trailor then so mad when i saw it was rated R. i might be able to convince my mom to let me see it when it's on DVD but she'd make me fast-forward through the gory parts and that could really butcher the music (pun intended) it really sucks, Helena Bonhm-Carter is one of my favorites (even though i'm never quite certain how to spell her name, lol!)

There's a behind the scenes look at Johnny's singing on myspace's Sweeney Todd page that's pretty good. I think he sounds pretty good, but my husband keeps complaining because Johnny's a tenor and the role calls for a bass/baritone.~Annie Currently: Soloist for Night of Jazz fundraiser Recently: Miss Thorn (Ruthless! the Musical), Emma Carew (Jekyll & Hyde)

Re:Sweeney Todd trailer is released - 2007/11/26 00:58He isn't really a tenor, more high baritone, and the role calls for a low one. I don't think he has the range to hit tenor notes.
With some vocal training behind him, he could have quite the voice, I think. I know he avoided lessons for this film because he wanted to concentrate more on the acting and less on making sure his technique was right.
I really hope I'm able to see it the day it opens.. South Pacific opens that night, so my brother and I will probably walk over to the movie theatre for a midnight showing Kathleen Sera Current Shows: Crazy For You - Patricia Upcoming Auditions: Anne Of Green Gables - Anne, Diana

Re:Sweeney Todd trailer is released - 2007/11/26 02:13I didn't really think that he sounded that high in the clips we saw, but my husband was claiming that he was singing tenor. Personally, since I'm not a guy I don't really pay attention to which notes fall in which range
I just hope that when he goes from speaking with a rough voice he doesn't go into a smooth sound vocally. That makes me crazy!~Annie Currently: Soloist for Night of Jazz fundraiser Recently: Miss Thorn (Ruthless! the Musical), Emma Carew (Jekyll & Hyde)

Re:Sweeney Todd trailer is released - 2007/11/27 02:23(I was typing up a response when I spilled soup on my laptop.. I'll try to remember what I was going to say!)
I have heard some other songs from the film *cough..* and he uses the appropriate gruffness when he sings angrily and it's smoother when he's not so much (such as in Johanna).
Fach isn't just about the notes you're able to sing but the colour of your voice as well. It isn't quite light enough to be a true tenor (in the Gilbert and Sullivan sense, I mean) and it's not dark enough for a "traditional" Sweeney sound a la George Hearn. But I still think it sounds great, just different.
I've also read reports that Sondheim said he liked the film, just don't expect the stage show (which I already have on DVD, so I don't need it to be!).Kathleen Sera Current Shows: Crazy For You - Patricia Upcoming Auditions: Anne Of Green Gables - Anne, Diana

Re:Sweeney Todd trailer is released - 2007/11/28 23:58If anyone wants to spoil themselves, the official website (http://www.sweeneytoddmovie.com) has just updated itself with a slough of stuff! Including lots of song clips... So if you're curious to hear the voices before the film comes out have a look!Kathleen Sera Current Shows: Crazy For You - Patricia Upcoming Auditions: Anne Of Green Gables - Anne, Diana

Helena Bonham Carter: Sorry, she looks great (A sexy Mrs. Lovett works, whoda thunk it) But her singing is akin to a leaking radiator. Too much breath, no support and no emotion. All comic timing from the stage show is lost completely or simply cut out of the script. A Little Priest.. I fell asleep.
Johnny Depp- Now I really hate it when people compare actors to previous roles, but it can't be helped with this one. Johnny's accent is exactly the same as Jack Sparrow (Less the humor and irony which might have worked in this actually) and he sings like Jack Sparrow. It is all nasal and simply has no true tone to it at all. His acting helps some, but I don’t think it could redeem it completely. The white streak in the hair believe it or not is very annoying, the set, costumes all are reminiscent of Scissorhands, you can help but make the comparison and Tim did it on purpose, or so I have read.. he isn’t Hitchcock, he shouldn’t try
Sasha Baron Cohen: Surprise!! This man can sing.. not terrific but he pulls this one off. It is the highlight of the movie.
Tobias - (sorry didn’t catch the name of the actor) Cute.. too cute.. too sweet.. loses it. It is like watching Oliver play in blood. When he sings Not While I’m Around you expect him after the song to say “more?” didn’t buy it sorry kid. A mature tenor voice is much better for that role.
Lucy; (again missed the actor name) Very good.... pulls it off and is superb, even if half her lines are cut!
Alan Rickman: Awesome. But then he always is. Again, pleasure to watch his scenes. He steals the screen from Depp and everyone else.
The rest of the cast is good, nothing terrible or awesome. But good.
The cinematography is beautiful and haunting, some very nice stuff as far as that is concerned.
Overall, as I said, disappointing, but not a complete loss - the Chair is awesome.
I think it is worth seeing, but it follows the old school of Movie Musical making, which I hoped they had learned doesn’t work. Unlike Chicago or Hairspray where there were just some minor changes, the whole thing is basically changed.. Think of Grease.. the movie and the play are not even close to being alike.. That is Sweeney Todd.. although still recognizable as ST, the stage play is so much better.Currently Directing - Sweeney Todd (March 2008)
Currently In - Jan 11 - Feb 3 2008 Moonlight And Magnolias - Ben Hecht (non musical)

Re:Sweeney Todd trailer is released - 2007/12/08 11:42i read on another forum i visit that the humor was "sucked out" but for the most part it worked.
i didn't see the sneak peak but i've seen some trailers. and i said the same thing about johnny depp, johnnyonenote! i like almost everything johnny depp is in but his sweeney seemed a wee bit too jack sparrow. it was weird. mr. depp's singing is better than i expected, but i kept "seeing" a pirate.
though i am not a huge fan of the musical-turned-movie--nor of tim burton too much-- i hope to see this one when it hits theatres. They call me Jessica (like: They call me lady luck... lol)
Favorite roles:
Eva Peron, Evita; Jack's Mother, Into the Woods; Sonia, Godspell; Anything Goes, Reno Sweeney; Audrey, Little Shop of Horrors; Catherine, Pippin
