In Need of Advice - 2006/12/23 00:18 I am escorting my parents in January on their first trip to New York City! I myself have been a few times, but neither of them have ever been! I'm planning the entire trip, right down to the hotel rooms and train tickets. The deal is, we are going up on a Thursday afternoon, staying the night in NJ, then taking the train into the city Friday morning. We'll leave back for Maryland Sunday morning.

We're seeing a production of the fantastics, but they want to see a big, huge, Broadway musical. The dilema? Which one?! I need you guys's help. What would be a good first Broadway musical for both of my parents?

Re:In Need of Advice - 2006/12/23 03:08 Hmmm.... for a classic large scale musical I recommend seeing either Les Miserables or The Phantom of the Opera or if they'd rather see something more contemporary, I suggest Hairspray.

Good luck choosing a show and have a great time on your trip! I'm heading to NYC next week with my mom & cannot wait

Re:In Need of Advice - 2006/12/23 11:49 i've heard really great things about The Color Purple. Phantom... is good, too. Also....The Lion King and Mary Poppins if you are into the disney ones. I just don't ticket availability on any of them. You can do the box office, or you can be adventurous and check out TKTS-- see what's available and wing it. I did that several years ago and got really good seats to Saturday Night Fever-- not a show i really thought about going to, but i ended up loving it! They call me Jessica (like: They call me lady luck... lol)

Favorite roles:

Eva Peron, Evita; Jack's Mother, Into the Woods; Sonia, Godspell; Anything Goes, Reno Sweeney; Audrey, Little Shop of Horrors; Catherine, Pippin

Re:In Need of Advice - 2006/12/23 15:12 i bet your parents would love The Drowsy Chaperone. Its a great old fashioned light musical comedy and pretty much all of the original cast is still there including tony winners sutton foster, beth leavel and the AMAZING bob martin.

Re:In Need of Advice - 2006/12/23 22:51 To echo jmslp, you should definitely check out TKTS. Every time I've gone there I had such great seats, and you could actually see two shows for the price of one! ----------Emily----------

Re:In Need of Advice - 2006/12/26 18:49 I was waiting for someone to say Drowsy! (I knew it'd be Eleanor!) Go see Drowsy. That's my opinion. Your parents will totally love it. Shelby

Re:In Need of Advice - 2006/12/27 03:04 for a BIG show that's classic, go with phantom or les mis (maybe beauty and the beast, but your parents might not want to, cuz they've "seen the movie 100 times".) for something BIG and modern/pop-ish, see hairspray or wicked. *´¨)

Re:In Need of Advice - 2006/12/27 05:34 If they want to see a classic, I'd probably go for Phantom or Les Miz. But I think Wicked could be good too for a first experience

But I also agree with the people who suggested TKTS.
