Re:DQ: 10/25/06 - Offensive? - 2007/09/09 16:56 I also agree that if you accept a role you accept it as is. The only acception would possibly be if you make it clear to the directors at an audition that you won't cuss or whatever it is that you want to change. I've never seen anyone do that, though, only heard about it once. If you won't do the part as written, don't audition for it. You shouldn't have the excuse of not knowing that whatever it was is in the script, because you should always do your research before auditioning. Simple as that.

Personally, I'm a Christian, and I won't do certain things. I won't cuss, won't show too much skin, won't do sex scenes, won't act gay, and won't do drinking or drugs. I haven't run into problems with that in the past, but I'm sure I will in the future. I know that it's the character, not me, doing things, but I just don't want people to think that because I do those things onstage, I do them in real life. I just want to stay away from the rumors as much as possible.

As for kissing, my first kiss was as the Baker's Wife this summer in ITW Jr. I don't mind the stage kisses, but I completely understand if people are uncomfortable with them. Some people just aren't physical people. That's their personal choice.

Re:DQ: 10/25/06 - Offensive? - 2007/09/16 08:05 Ugh, Cabaret *shudder*

Actually, the show kind of grew on me when I was in it, but that's because it had time- I was in the ensemble. And there is no ensemble in Cabaret. So we pretty much moved furniture, it was terrible.

But anyway. If I had to do the Cabaret storyline, I'd chose to do the play version of it instead, I Am a Camera. I'd love to play Sally, she's got some great scenes.

And as a person who doesn't swear, i was met with a situation described- the director of the female Odd Couple, in which I play Mickey, is making me swear. We've taken out a lot of the swear words, and I really don't know why he thinks this one is necessary. But I just skipped over it during the read-through, as I did with many others, and he was like, "No, go back and say it." So now I have to swear in the scene. It's not too bad, I guess, but still, it's so easy and I'm afraid it'll become a habit. That's why I've never sworn before, because I know it'll slip out if I start.

Re:DQ: 10/25/06 - Offensive? - 2007/10/15 19:56 As for songs, nothing comes to mind, but it makes my teeth itch when I hear a ridiculous substitute for a swearword in a song. I.E., In high school, I did a talent show with a young lady who sang The Diva's Lament from Spamalot. I had to shake my had and sigh when I heard the phrase "I'll call my agent, DANG it!" No offense, but for the love of all that's good and holy, that just sounds awful. Minor, hard to notice substitutions are okay, and in some cases prefferable, but sometimes you just have to draw the line and stop others from butchering good songs. Sean

Re:DQ: 10/25/06 - Offensive? - 2007/10/16 01:56 i have never seen this many people with an aversion to swearing in my life. i find it really interesting that there are so many people who won't swear. i mean, i grew up prevatican ii, which is pretty much like mel gibson catholic, so there was no bad language in my house, and my mom still reprimands me when the f-word slips out, but i guess i learned not to really care or to let words have any power.
not much offends me anymore because i dont let it. the s-word is only a four letter expletive, and cant hurt me. i guess i learned to be this way from a couple friends i have, one who is black and one who is native. i heard them being called the n-word and other stuff and asked why they didnt react or if it bothered them. Justine said that to react is to give that person power over her with something as simple as a word. a word cant hurt you if you dont let it, and i guess from then on i just started really believing in that. i respect that other people believe its wrong to swear, but i kinda have to ask why? something i genuinly dont understand is how a word itself can be bad. yes, giving in certain context it can, but at the same time i could call you a fluffly pink marshmallow in a derisive context and mean it in the worst possible way possible and would it not be the same as calling you a see-you-next-tuesday?
im currently at a performing arts conservatory and on our first day we got the lecture to leave our reservations and restrictions at the door, because art has no room for censorship or inhibitions. i guess thats just what i believe, and why no shows offend me.

(also, for those who dont believe in swearing, im not knocking your beliefs, i just dont understand them, but if you believe strongly in it then right on!)

Re:DQ: 10/25/06 - Offensive? - 2007/10/16 17:28 Frankly, I don't care if I'm swearing onstage because, as you said, it's the character, not you, who's saying the words. For our school talent show this year a friend of mine and I are thinking of doing "Take Me Or Leave Me," and I'm quite comfortable leaving 'damn' in there. However, since it is a school function they may tell me to change it. Because last year when a girl was doing a song she said damn once and everyone gasped..it was actually kind of funny. But anyways I wouldn't want to change the words to that because 1.)it wouldn't rhyme and 2.) it's what makes the song real. So...perhaps I'll just leave it in there and see what they say, though I may have to come back for alternate wording suggestions. Melchi Gabor, he's such a radical!!!
