increasing singing range.. - 2006/11/19 04:01 hey all.
I have been doing exercises and everythng to try to increase my vocal range...right now it's about an octave and a half. I warm up and everything but it hasn't improved and I'm starting to lose my lower range (which could just be as my voice changes). Does anyone know anything I can do to effectively increase my singing range? Thanx.

Re:increasing singing range.. - 2006/11/19 09:27 Are you trying to stretch your vocal range both ways, or are you just concentrating on making it higher? Because if you just work on your upper range, it will just shift and you'll lose your lower notes (like you said was happening).

Re:increasing singing range.. - 2006/11/19 14:22 What I normally did was practiced, practiced, practiced, but what REALLY helped was when I got a voice teacher. My range ended at a high d, and I moved it up to a high e, which I could only squeak before, but now I can hit it full on. Current Show: Coppelia (Swanhilda's friend)

Re:increasing singing range.. - 2006/11/19 16:53 yeah, i would practice alot. but take breaks, your throat will kill the next day if you don't, trust me! a voice teacher is the best thing to do. before i got mine, i could only sing to an E on the octave above midde C. but now i can sing about an octave higher than that. i also learned how to do low notes, but i can only go to an A below middle C *´¨)

I have a few things to say about this.

First off, I am always wary of those trying to "self-train". Your vocal mechanism is a part of your body and needs to be treated with care and respect - unlike other musical instruments, if you break it you cannot buy a new one! If you are serious about improving your technique, you NEED to seek a qualified and experienced vocal instructor.

How long have you been working at this? Actually extending range does NOT happen quickly. Since range is largely dependant on the actual shape of your vocal chords, any change at all WILL happen slowly, and there is some limit to how much you will ever increase. Changes happen slowly over time and most often will occur in plateaus - no change for a period of time, followed by a sudden increase.

Having said that, there is virtually no point in trying to improve your range if you aren't building on proper breathing technique. I have worked with singers very often who did not actually change their range but "unlocked" a part of it they had never used once they learned to sing with proper breathing technique (as well as using their chest/head resonances properly).
