Physical Stage Presence While singing??? - 2006/11/25 23:15 I have no stage presence when I’m singing. People have told me that I have a great presence while acting, but when I start singing, I just have no physical presence at all. I’ve been training for quite a while now, and I can sing with expression, but I have no physical presence. I just curl up, my muscles start jumping all over the place and my limbs turn into jelly. I’m not physically expressive at all, and you can’t sing in a musical without being physically expressive. And even if I really “feel” the emotion of the song, it just never shows on my face, but I do have facial expression when acting. I try to think of singing as just acting, only with music…..but I just can’t get it. Even when I think of it that way, I still can’t sing it the way I orate.

How do I build up a good physical presence while singing? Is it possible to learn? There’s not a single person I know that could to help me. I just stopped taking voice lessons because I can’t afford it. I have no contact with anyone who knows about music. Most recent role: Penelope Pennywise in Urinetown

Re:Physical Stage Presence While singing??? - 2006/11/25 23:50 People have told me that I have really good presence while singing. I simply make my face animated. A lot of young people make the mistake of letting their eyes glaze while they're concentrating on singing. Try to lift your eyebrows a little, smile but make sure it's not fake. Maybe you should try saying the words before you sing them. Then just do the same motions you did when you were saying the song as a monologue. Try not to go overboard though. You don't want to look like you choreographed your face. Current Show: Coppelia (Swanhilda's friend)

Re:Physical Stage Presence While singing??? - 2006/11/26 00:05 Try acting the words like a monologue beforehand, it'll help you get an idea of what to do while you're singing. If you have presence while your acting, it shouldn't be that hard to translate it to your song. Whatever you do, don't concentrate to hard on the song or the music. Your voice might not come out as perfectly, but it'll make your acting better. It's a sacrifice you have to make. If the song doesn't come out quite perfect, it's okay, because the audience is also paying attention to your acting and if you mess up a bit while in character, they'll probably just think it's part of the character. -Georgia
