What Next? - 2007/12/03 16:55All right, I've got a bit of a dilemma-
A theatre near me, which is a very well-known, very good theatre, has a children's show program. I've never paid much attention to it, but I was looking on their website a few weeks ago and saw that they were going to be doing The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I have beendying to play Susan for awhile now, so I was really excited. I've auditioned there before (some of you will remember reading about my Peter Pan audition) and I took their kid/teen camp there over the summer. I've never seen them post audition notices for their kids' shows before, so I decided to e-mail the children's casting director and ask if there would be any auditions. We know each other, so I thought she'd be willing to tell me. So I e-mail her a short, friendly message asking if there would be any auditions for the production of TLTWATW. I waited for two weeks. No answer. So I looked on their website again and e-mailed the head CD. Wited while longer. No answer. Last week, my mom called the lady I'd first e-mailed and got her answering machine. We still haven't gotten any answer.
I'm getting a little irritated. I think it is being extremely unprofessional to not answer their messages or e-mails. I didn't call at first because I didn't want to put them on the spot. I would even be happy if they answered me and said, "No, I'm sorry, we're not auditioning people for this." Then, at least, I could stop thinking about it.
So what should I do next? I really want this role, but I don't want to go so far as to be unprofessional and naggy.Auditioning for: Brigadoon, theatre season, American Music Theatre, Into the Woods, Sound of Music, and AMDA.

Re:What Next? - 2007/12/03 17:51Unfortunately, this doesn't look good. I've worked with a group that is terrible about getting in touch with people and then when they do they expect you to be at their beck and call. I'm not saying that's how this group is, but it is really unprofessional for them to ignore e-mails and phone calls.
Best case scenerio she's out of town on vacation and hasn't gotten your call/e-mails and you'll hear from her soon.
Worst case scenario, you'll never hear from her and you should just concentrate on the other shows that you are interested in instead.
I'd let it go and if you hear something, great, and if not, well, at least you haven't been sitting around waiting for the phone to ring.~Annie Currently: Soloist for Night of Jazz fundraiser Recently: Miss Thorn (Ruthless! the Musical), Emma Carew (Jekyll & Hyde)

Re:What Next? - 2007/12/04 09:37Do they have an option for submission on their website? If they do, you can always send in your headshot and resume as a reminder to them that you are interested and available to audition for something. Sometimes theatres get weird with the "no phone calls to the theatre" rule for auditions. Hope it works out!

Re:What Next? - 2007/12/09 21:53I found an audition notice for a Sound of Music there (which I also really want to be in). So when I call to make an audition appointment, I'll try on last time to get them to answer me.Auditioning for: Brigadoon, theatre season, American Music Theatre, Into the Woods, Sound of Music, and AMDA.

Re:What Next? - 2008/01/03 20:33Wait, I am confused. They are doing a show, but they are not holding auditions? Unless they are just going assign the parts to their friends, how are they going to cast the show? Am I missing something?

Re:What Next? - 2008/01/05 18:57It's possible that they might be holding closed auditions, or they might jut be choosing people from those they've had in shows before- I don't know, they won't tell me.Auditioning for: Brigadoon, theatre season, American Music Theatre, Into the Woods, Sound of Music, and AMDA.

Re:What Next? - 2008/01/16 15:25Hey, guys, a great turn of events!
After months of not hearing anything, on Monday, I opened my e-mail to find a message with the subject line, LION, WITCH,WARDROBE. I was so excited, and the director has invited me to the closed auditions! I was right- you pretty much have to ask about the auditions to get one, and I suspect that they invite people they've worked with before.
Now I have to figure out HOW I'm going to audition- because the actual audition day (this Saturday, and my 18th birhtday), I have a rehearsal (maybe) and two performances. The audition is at 3 and I have a show at 2:30. So we've been e-mailing back and forth and she seems a bit wary of having me audition because, like most people, she's daunted by my schedule, which is always literally overflowing with stuff. She also asked my age and said that school might be a problem... which I find odd because she knows me- and even if she doesn't remember me, I have to be high school age or younger because I went to one of her camps this past summer. So she's sending me the rehearsal schedule. There's a good chance I won't be able to make it work out, what with Secret School rehearsals, but I really hope I at least get the chance to audition.
I'm just so excited I even got invited to the closed auditions. It just goes to show that asking can't help and perserverance is key!
EDIT:
Well, she e-mailed me back and they only have a week of rehearsals (whoa! I knew this, but still, wow!) and they open the same day SS does. She also said that she has already spoken to peope about the roles, so I'm pretty sure she knows who she wants. She wrote, "Since there is no guarantee that you will be in this show - I would like to encourage you to stay focused on the two shows that you are doing with your school. You made a commitment to them first - and I really appreciate and respect actors who honor prior commitments." At least she likes that I said I couldn't (obviously) skip a performance.
But I'm just happy I got invited- I would have loved to be in this, but it's pretty much impossible and would intefere with my schedule a lot- and i especially can't do two shows at once! She did, however, invite me to audition for The Sound of Music in April and scheduled a time slot for me. So, you know, it's all okay.
