Re:Help with current role as Belle... - 2008/01/03 19:47 Theres not much left for me to say except congratulations!!! The whole thing with the girls not getting the role. You don't need to strive to impress them. You got the role for a reason. No matter what anyopne else says, the directors picked you. Break a leg!!!

Re:Help with current role as Belle... - 2008/01/06 00:25 Ross- Thanks... I realize that musical theatre isn't exactly the best place to be preoccupied with what others think of you, and I really ought to stop worrying about it, because people have been surprisingly nice about the whole thing so far.

Update on how things are going in general-

We had our first (and, so far, only) rehearsal last Thursday, which was a read-through. It was a little odd because the Beast wasn't there (he'd gone away for Christmas, I think?) so the Prince (who is also Monsieur D'arque... go figure) read for him. It was a really informal kind of thing, just a chance to get together, introduce ourselves to the new people, and go over the script and music for the people who didn't know it.

As for the acting, the director came up to me after rehearsal was over and said she was blown away with how genuine my acting was, and the guy who plays Maurice said I'd even made her [the director] cry a little during some parts. I honestly hope I'm deserving of the praise, but I'm feeling a bit more confident, anyhow.

We also went through the songs. Singing was optional, and it was only me, Mrs. Potts, Mme., and the Silly Girls who sang. The Prince also sang "If I Can't Love Her" which was a little sad because he'll never get to perform it... He has a beautiful voice. Anyhow. I had an awful sore throat- let me explain. It's weird, but my voice doesn't sound bad at all when I'm getting sick, until a certain point. So I actually sounded good for about the first half of the singing, but after that it really just started to crack and go all over the place. I'm not really worried about it, though- no one was expecting perfection when we were just messing around and going through stuff.

Next week we begin actual rehearsals- I get to work on Belle and No Matter What, both of which I adore. I'm incredibly excited.

Re:Help with current role as Belle... - 2008/01/06 11:14 Bruce- Thanks! I hope things continue to go well, too- but really, as long as I'm rehearsing frequently (which it looks like I will be) I'm a happy camper.

And I'm definitely trying to take more pictures of this production... In the past I've only taken a few at dress rehearsals and right before the show, so hopefully I get more this time, and when I do, I'll definitely post them.

Re:Help with current role as Belle... - 2008/01/09 20:56 More updates

Haha, sorry, I'll stop with these soon, but I just wanted to say how things are going now that we've started actual rehearsals.

Yesterday Maurice and I learned "No Matter What" and blocked that and the 2 scenes before. It went well, I think. It's such a cute scene to do, and it was really fun working with Gaston too.

Today we were supposed to do the music/blocking for the Silly Girl scenes, "Me", and "Belle Reprise". Unfortunately, Gaston got in a bit of trouble at school today and his parents wouldn't let him out of the house. So we blocked the Silly Girl scenes anyhow, they learned their section of "Belle", and I did "Belle Reprise". We blocked it before we reviewed the music, so I COMPLETELY botched it the first time around (I mean, I knew it before we went over it, but...) but I think I sounded decent singing.

Our director told me that our stage manager (he's a senior in college, I think, and one of the chorus member's older brothers) said that I have a perfect voice for Belle, which is good. Haha, I do like getting compliments of course, I just have to remind myself not to let them go to my head because even though I got the part, I'm not the most talented singer in the production.

Actually, before this whole thing started, I thought that singing would be the hardest thing for me, but it's really not as bad as I'd thought. My biggest problem right now is probably my stage presence... Belle is supposed to be very graceful and everything, and I have a very, ah, awkward presence. I don't think my acting itself is too bad, I just can't seem to get stage movement down and it always comes off looking weird. I suppose it's because that's kind of how I am in real life, and it's much easier to go from naturally graceful to awkward on stage than vice versa.

Also, sort of related to this show- at the end of the month our chorus is singing at some sort of a telethon, and my director (who, incidentally, is also the chorus teacher) is having me, the Beast, and possibly a few others sing at it. So now I suppose I just have to decide between "Home" and "A Change in Me".

I'm so excited about all of this! I am also realizing on how much my life depends on having rehearsals... I don't have another one until Monday, and I'm already missing them! I'm insane, I swear.
