Anne of Green Gables - too soon? - 2007/11/30 12:22 well, my youth group is thinking of putting on Anne of Green Gables (the play, not the musical) in the spring. however in a town about an hour away from where we are they put on the musical Anne of Green Gables this fall. we have been thinking about doing this since before we found out that they were doing the musical. should we change our plans now, or are we far enough away that we would have a different audience, especially since it's strait drama not a musical?

Re:Anne of Green Gables - too soon? - 2007/11/30 12:53 How much crossover do you get audience wise? If it's only a handful of people I say do it anyway. In a lot of the Chicago suburbs the same shows go on within a few months of each other all the time. Besides you're going to be doing a different version. I say go for it. ~Annie

Re:Anne of Green Gables - too soon? - 2007/12/03 07:47 I definitely understand your concern, any crossover will be compared unfairly seeming as there different but I say go for it anyway. Currently Combeferre

Re:Anne of Green Gables - too soon? - 2007/12/03 16:35 Is it a high school, community theatre, or something else that did the musical in the fall? I think that you're far enough away that, especially if it was only a high school production, you won't get much of a crossover audience. Personally I don't ever travel more than 30 minutes to see a show unless I really, really have an undying urge to see it (or if it's on, say, Broadway - which is a 2-hour plane flight away!). Anne of Green Gables isn't terribly well-known, so I don't think people would be travelling all over to see it.

Re:Anne of Green Gables - too soon? - 2007/12/05 12:40 It was a little theatre that did it, and it is my church youth group that is thinking of doing it now. We just got a new building and it has a fabulous stage and auditorium but it has never really been put to use, so we thought we would try it out by putting on Anne. Also where we are (Sauble Beach if anyones heard of it) is a huge tourist destination so doing it in the spring/beginning of summer would open up a whole new audience with all the summer people comeing up that weren't in the area for the fall production.

Re:Anne of Green Gables - too soon? - 2007/12/05 19:18 I say go for it. Around here (and I live in a relatively large city - it's in the top 15 biggest cities in the U.S.), shows are sometimes produced within MONTHS of each other. I think we have two productions of Suessical going on next spring. One year is plenty of time, especially if you're an hour away.

Re:Anne of Green Gables - too soon? - 2008/01/02 16:01 it depends on how much theatre is in your area- if there are an abundance of theatre groups, etc. then it wouldn't be much of a problem.

And since they're different shows, I'd say to go for it!
