Musical for a really small high school to do? - 2008/04/28 12:52 I saw a topic similiar to this further down but I thought since mine was specific to me, it would be ok to post a seperate topic. (I'm really sorry if its not!)

Anyway, my school is a very small country school with more farmers than actors. This year, we are doing our first musical in YEARS. It being, You're a Good Man Charlie Brown. (I'm Lucy!)

The thing is, we have a big shortage of guys. (the guy who plays Charlie is pretty good, the guy who plays Linus is graduating, and for Shroeder...we had to ask one of the janitors...who is in his 20s and talented but not a student...)

My whole question is, what show could we possibly do next year with really only one guy? (we can get as many girls as needed)

Oh, and...we don't have an actual stage. At all. We are performing YAGMCB on the cafeteria floor. (Which is working out fine but obviously we could not pull off doing something like Oklahoma!)

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Re:Musical for a really small high school to do? - 2008/04/28 14:18 Too bad there is no musical version of "Steel Magnolias" or "The (Female) Odd Couple". I suppose you could do A Chorus Line and change everyone to female dancers. Maybe the janitor could play the casting director.

Keep in mind that no matter where you go, that is always going to be a problem. I auditioned for a show recently where they were looking for 2 and 2 and they had 14 and 1 (me!). It was great for me, because I got to read with all of the women, but every place I go, whether it is high school productions or community theatre, the women are always complaining about having to play men!

Re:Musical for a really small high school to do? - 2008/04/28 14:30 What about "A....My Name is Alice"? Make the part that's technically supposed to be a girl playing a guy just a guy playing a guy. Just a thought...the music's great and it's a really entertaining show! Current role: Eponine in Les Miserables

Favorite role: Velma Kelly in Chicago, Mary Jane in Big River

Dream role: Shelly in Bat Boy, Eva in Evita

Re:Musical for a really small high school to do? - 2008/04/28 14:51 A...My Name is Alice does have great music. "All Girl Band" is so awesome. I'm hoping to suggest it for the jazz choir I'm auditioning for next year (she told me I'm pretty much in and that I'll be a first alto or something like that). Upcoming: US Performing Arts Camps
Currently:
Henrietta (Honk Jr.!)
Nessarose (MdN's Wicked)
Enjolras (ENG)/Eponine (FREN) (Les Miz Online Cast Recording)

Re:Musical for a really small high school to do? - 2008/04/29 13:17 Wow, you need to work on getting the guys involved!!! Start a recruit campaign.

This sometimes works. You know, getting in shows is a great way to meet girls. Of course it is also a great way to meet guys too.

It really has to be THE SOCIAL event of the year. Hopefully that will attract more folks to be interested. The idea is to get the whole school involved, which can happen if you have such a small school. When more kids are involved, more tickets will be sold. Then as time goes on, you will be able to do better shows.

Re:Musical for a really small high school to do? - 2008/04/29 16:25 Yeah. My school has the same problem with a lack of guys, so we teamed up with a school close by and we are going to put on "Ruthless!" next year. That actually wouldn't be a bad idea for you guys. It's an all female cast (one of the roles can be played in drag, and it was infact when done proffesionally) and there are only six people needed when you double it as suggested. I've heard the soundtrack and it's really catchy and fun. So you might wanna check that out. It's by Marvin Laird. Hope this helps. ^^ Current Role: Louise Lerman/Eve (Judy's Assistant) in "Ruthless!" by Marvin Laird.
Recently: Lala Levy in "The Last Night of Ballyhoo" by Alfred Uhry.

Re:Musical for a really small high school to do? - 2008/04/29 22:33 Yea, "Ruthless" is a really fun show. It's a take-off of the play/movie "The Bad Seed". Great for a small cast.

Re:Musical for a really small high school to do? - 2008/05/01 14:54 Ooooh! I saw "Ruthless" as a One-Act Play this year. (with no songs but i knew it was supposed to be a musical) It was honestly just ok...but I'm sure it was because of the lack of songs and all that!

Yay! I've got some ideas to pitch now! Thanks!
