Win the Race? - 2008/01/21 17:12 So im Brazilian but I look black. this makes it difficult to get exactly what
leads i want in shows like Guys and Dolls or Pirates of Penzance. Im happy that just just got the lead as Gideon (the youngest) in 7 brides for 7 brothers (my school does old, large anssemble shows). but it seems im either type casted because of my 'baby face" or my skin type. When I had the part Doody in Grease (the littlest again) people would ask " hey was he black in the movie?" It dosen't get to me but it seems like the buff, blonde, white guys get the better roles. Any tips on how to overcome the type casting and maybe some ideas on how to stand with the others?

Re:Win the Race? - 2008/01/21 18:11 You're not going to change people's casting prejudices, but you can develop your talent enough that they would be stupid not to cast you.

My Jamaican friend has played everything from Sky Masterson to Officer Lockstock because he's obnoxiously talented. He's also 50 years old, though. Until then, start goading your theater group into doing something like Side Show. Jake has the best song, anyway.

Re:Win the Race? - 2008/01/21 18:20 i agree.
all casting directors have their own mindset. some might be stuck on your apperance, while some could see beyond it.
i think the best thing for you to do is develop your talents to a new level.

show casting directors that your talents outshine your skin tone.
another tip, when audtitioning, choose peices that show your versitility. If you're going for the romantic lead, sing or act a piece that helps the director visualize you in the role.

typecasting isn't good, but try to play the hand you were delt, and find ways to use it to your advantage
i have to know if i can be astonishing!

Re:Win the Race? - 2008/02/26 14:04 Yes, it can be hard, but you just have to work harder. Make it your goal to be the most talented artist at your auditions. Train, train, train. Be the best and you won't be overlooked as often. This is a battle you will always have - even the biggest stars of color fight this common problem.
