Sue Me - 2007/01/11 22:30 Not exactly a performance, but I stll feel brag-worthy!

At the end of February, there is a state theatre competition called Thespian Festival. I've already planned to do two duets and a solo, and am working on them now. (except the solo- I haven't picked it yet [eek!])

Anyway, my friend Alex (who was my husband in Seussical) and I are doing "Sue Me" from Guys & Dolls. We got the music right before Christmas Break, and we both took a copy to learn the individual parts. And yesterday we sang it together for the first time, with an accompanist.

AND OMG... it was amazing. even though we had just planned on singing it through, before we knew it, we were so into it that we were making up blocking as we went along... we were both SO INTO the song. I have never been that into a character before. It felt so natural.. I belted up to a B flat! (Usually that is really hard for me) And Alex was the best I'd ever heard him sing. It was Magic.

After we were done, we found out the entire musical theatre class was standing outside the practice room, listening. Our director was really impressed. If every rehearsal goes so well, I really think we'll win at the competition. The song is great for us, it's great for competition, and it's funny, which tends to help.

As soon as we get it blocked and rehearse more, I'll put a video up.

Yay for Chemistry!

Has Anyone else had a magic moment like that?

Re:Sue Me - 2007/01/12 16:04 I haven't been lucky to have that sort of chemistry but it sounds amazing! I'm happy you ended up going with Sue Me. I just LOVE that song. Shelby

Re:Sue Me - 2007/01/13 04:07 Nice. That is such a great song. I love how in the Lane version of the song, they emphasize the disonance in that one part where they hold out: "Al riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight already". Y'know what I'm talking about? Ye? no? Yes? No? CURRENTLY: Captain George Brackett in South Pacific AUDITIONS: Fiddler on the Roof, Les Miserables: School Edition, RECENTLY: Gremio in The Taming of the Shrew, Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks in Annie

Re:Sue Me - 2007/01/19 02:02 Oooh, ooh, I do!

I personally hate the version of the song that I have -- the Nathan is very obnoxious. It's on the CD that has the bonus songs from the film. Not sure what cast that was...some revival, I believe. Sinatra's version is just...sigh. Awesome.

Re:Sue Me - 2007/01/25 00:42 I KNOW! I love the Lane/Prince version. We're actually 'borrowing' *wink* a good bit of their blocking. We both saw the YouTube video and couldn't get it out of our heads!

And after a couple more rehearsals, we've decided to take it down a key. Between the high F in his part that he kept cracking and the B flat in my part (I usually switch to head voice right there, but it just doesn't sound right in this song) we decided it would be better to do it in an easier key for both of us. I doubt anyone but us would notice a half-step difference.

The competition is February 24th and 25th. I absolutely cannot wait. I'm doing two other events there as well. I'm doing another duet, "Some Things Are Meant to Be" from Little Women (as Jo), and "Astonishing" from Little Women. I didn't plan on doing two songs from the same show, it just worked out that way. Those songs are going really well, too.

I can't wait!

Re:Sue Me - 2007/04/28 21:26 That's so awesome! I absolutely adore "Sue Me." I saw a high school production of Guys and Dolls and just fell in love with the song. One of the things that made it so great was this sad undertone in it. Most of the time the song is just comedic, but the actors in this production added a little bit of sorrow to it. They made Nathan's desperation and Adelaide's suspicion and sadness more apparent than I've ever seen it in the song. Of course it was funny, but it also made the audience feel sympathetic. •••♥♫♥•••
