What songs have you been assigned? - 2006/11/14 21:51 This has been my first two months taking voice classes and I've done quite a few songs in the short time I've taken a class. I was just curious what songs your voice teacher(if you have one) has added for your repertoire. For me, I've done:
1. Mira from Carnival!
2. Much More from The Fantasticks(yes its overdone, but she was working with me on my belt/mix)
3. Art is Calling for Me from the operetta The Enchantress (working on my coloratura here)
4. A Change in Me from Beauty and the Beast
5. It Might as Well be Spring from State Fair

That's all we've done so far. I'm loving taking voice lessons!

btw, I had to register again for the forum, but I'm the same Juliet who's been here since the summer. I don't know why it didn't have my username or password. Did that happen to anyone else?

Re:What songs have you been assigned? - 2006/11/15 04:24 Hmmm...I've worked on so much but some of the things I've worked on are

"Why Can't You Behave" from Kiss Me Kate
"Ten Minutes Ago" from Cinderella
"Many a New Day" From Oklahoma
"Far From the Home I Love" From Fiddler on the Roof
"Car Mio Ben" (I think that's how you spell it) It's an Italian love song
and
"Foor Good" from Wicked. I'm singing it with my friend who studies with the same voice teacher

Re:What songs have you been assigned? - 2006/11/15 22:36 I got a new voice teacher this year, and I really like her. She's added to my repertoire:

Maybe from Annie (I have always wanted to sing this song, but could never sing it correctly, and now I can and I am very happy)
Where is Love? from Oliver (can't stand the musical, but I have to admit that this is a pretty song)
Tao Lo Sai (I think that's how you spell it, but I can't be sure. Anyway, it's Italian and very pretty and I love it)
Don't Cry for Me, Argentine (I actually worked on this with my other voice teacher, but Alissa goes more in depth into the songs.)

Juliet- I heard the song Mira for the first time over the summer and I loved it! It's so pretty!
Auditioning for: Brigadoon, theatre season, American Music Theatre, Into the Woods, Sound of Music, and AMDA.

Currently In: Nothing

Re:What songs have you been assigned? - 2006/11/15 23:39 before things were getting hectic with my voice teacher (whom i luv!!) i was learning:

Out Of My Dreams (Oklahoma)

The Song Is You (Music In The Air)

I've Never Been In Love Before (Guys and Dolls)

then, i had to find an audition song, and drama club was getting in the way.

Re:What songs have you been assigned? - 2006/11/16 04:43 I'm between teachers right now but with my old teacher I learned a lot of artsongs including "When Love is Kind", "The Sandman", and "Below in the Valley". I also learned this absolutely gorgeous and relatively unknown Christmas song called "In the Bleak Midwinter" which I absolutely love. Some of the Broadway songs I learned were "Ten Minutes Ago" from Cinderella, "Till There Was You" and "Goodnight My Someone" from the Music Man, and "Delovely" from Anything Goes. I also recently learned "Johnny One Note" from Babes in Arms with my choir director. -Georgia

Re:What songs have you been assigned? - 2006/11/17 03:17 I've started lessons with a new teacher in september and so far we've only worked on my three exam songs which are «Emmenez-moi» (Charles Aznavour), «Vole» (Céline Dion) and «Think Of Me» (Phantom)... It's not much but we've done more technique than actual songs... I'm working on my fifth Vaccai, though

Re:What songs have you been assigned? - 2007/02/02 01:34 I've taken lessons since last fall. I had my senior recital on the 20th, so we worked on a lot of stuff for that (mostly everything). So what I've done with her so far is:

Caro Mio Ben (Italian, obviously...as are the next two)
Gia il Sole Dal Gange
Per la Gloria
Who'll Buy My Lavender? (a sweet ballad)
My Johann (I LOVE this one! It's a fun, legit flirty song.)
Love's Philsophy (A 20th century art song)
Home (Bat
Far From the Home I Love
Think of Me (she didn't officially pick this for me but I wanted to do it in my recital)

I noticed some of you have done Caro Mio Ben...I now know it's like a standard for beginning Italian and when I first did it I thought nobody knew it.

Re:What songs have you been assigned? - 2007/02/02 04:40 are you talking strictly musical theatre pieces or like legit vocal pieces?? b/c ive been taking lessons for 6 years now and have done tons of musical theatre stuff, but also pretty much every RCM song from grades 1-8 and i find doin them really helps out with all my musical theater stuff, not to mention all the technique exercises and boring stuff like that Nikki!!
currently rehearsing: Lady Viola/Cesario (Twelfth Night), Joan of Arc (a raisin in the sun)

Re:What songs have you been assigned? - 2007/02/04 17:27 Right now, I'm working on a song I'm using for a contest (not really a contest, the directors just grade you) and it can't be a MT song. Darn. So I'm singing Danny Boy. (it's been used alot in choruses, maybe you've heard it.) And I might start working on Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again for a spring concert. *´¨)

Re:What songs have you been assigned? - 2007/02/04 18:53 i've found it really helpful to incorporate some legit pieces into my repertoire....like many singers here I've gone through the 24 Italian Songs (the ones i remember are "caro mio ben", "sebben crudele", "o del mio dolce ardor") and some opera stuff ("voi che sapete", "un bel di", "the trees on the mountain", "the silver aria"). i've also done the classical mozart stuff; the "alleluia" from "exsultate jubilate", "pie jesu" from the faure "requiem", "laudate dominum" by mozart. i've found classical music very helpful in developing my passagio. musical theater-wise, i have my staples; "show me" from my fair lady, "moonfall" from the mystery of edwin drood, all my oklahoma songs, "only love" and "when i look at you" from the scarlet pimpernel. next up, i plan on adding some belting songs to my repertoire; i always get called back for belting parts (even though i very rarely audition with a belting piece) nand am pretty decent at it, but i'd love to be able to audition with a legit song and a belt song in the future.

i totally agree that taking voice lessons is an extremely important thing to do...it's invaluable to get someone else's perspective about how you sound (because it's inevitably different that what you hear in your head), to help you with songs you'll be performing, and to help you pick out new repertoire to challenge your voice.

roles (the significant ones): laurey in "oklahoma!", grace farrell in "annie", the mistress in "evita", cha-cha in "grease", marion thayer in "titanic"
