Swallowing Your Voice - 2007/01/18 12:30 I have a friend who's also in theatre who recently tried out for a production...he didn't make it because the teacher said he was "swallowing his voice". What is this problem and how can you fix it? Melchi Gabor, he's such a radical!!!

Re:Swallowing Your Voice - 2007/01/18 13:37 not exactly sure what that means about your friend. if i said that, i would probably be referring to a voice that is too much in the mouth or throat-- a voice that is not projected and not "free".

he should probably work on breathing exercises and learn how to "fill the space" w/ his voice. it's probably best that he work w/ a teacher/professional so he doesn't damage his voice.
They call me Jessica (like: They call me lady luck... lol)

Favorite roles:

Eva Peron, Evita; Jack's Mother, Into the Woods; Sonia, Godspell; Anything Goes, Reno Sweeney; Audrey, Little Shop of Horrors; Catherine, Pippin

Re:Swallowing Your Voice - 2007/01/18 19:13 I've used that phrase many times. It refers to allowing the resonance in your mouth to be back towards your throat instead of at the front. Often this happens because of thrusting the jaw forward or simply not opening your mouth enough for the sound to get out. (If you're pulling your tongue back this can also cause it too)

Remember that guy who was the singer for the band "Creed"? He sounded like that.

Re:Swallowing Your Voice - 2007/01/19 00:46 thank you for putting my thoughts into better words! i have used the term before but i wasn't sure that's what rizzo was referring to. now that i know someone else uses "swallowing his voice" in a very similar way, i know i am not crazy... okay... so i won't go that far....

and yes, scott stapp is a perfect example. sometimes, i wonder if he had a tongue..... HAHA!!!! i'm trying to think of some females who talk/sing like that.... i used to think jewel sounded a little like she sang in that manner in "who will save your soul"..... then there's always that woodchuck character that joey did on Full House....

Re:Swallowing Your Voice - 2007/01/19 00:52 I have always thought that Jewel has a pretty voice but she always seems to be manipulating it (like in Who Will Save...) instead of just letting it come out naturally.
So yes, I agree.

And you're not crazy! [Said the crazy lady.... ]
