similar roles? - 2008/03/01 19:25 So I'm trying to figure out my "type". Can you think of any roles similar to Mimi in Rent and Carmen in FAME? Something like young, ethnic (latina or black mostly), sassy, possibly kind of troubled girl, mostly belt? Since I'm mixed, I have a really *unique* look, so I'm trying to assure myself there are roles out there I could be cast in, lol. Help? ~*~ Kris ~*~

Nala in Lion King
Dulcinea in Man of La Mancha
Perhaps Anita in West Side Story
'Turn Back O Man' Singer in Godspell
Rose in Bye Bye Birdie

I hope that Helps!I just finished understudying Carmen!
There's also a ton of parts that don't require cetain ethnicites!
It's really cool that you know your 'Type' and your happy with it,I respect you ALOT for it!According to my directors and teachers I'm a 'character' actor and won't play the Ingenue. But oh-well,Props to you!

Re:similar roles? - 2008/03/04 13:48 Aldonza/Dulcinea really isn't a belt role. It's a role that utilizes some belt, but it also requires a high A and a couple tender ballads with legit F's.

Check out Kurt Weill's "Lost in the Stars." Everyone is troubled and South African in that show. There is a female belting role, as well, but I'm not sure of the character name.

Re:similar roles? - 2008/03/07 12:51 The whole world is opening up for you!!!!! My first thought is "West Side Story" - Anita or Maria. But today, many folks like to cast "non-traditional". So many new roles are opening up that were previously not available for you. My advice is find material someone your age can play in a believable way. Train to be the best singer, dancer, actor you can be. Let your talent show through. If you blow them away at your audition, a great director will cast around YOU. Don't worry that a role isn't traditionally cast with someone of a different ethnic/color. Be the best. Some may still turn you down, but you can feel good that you did your best and that someday you will get your chance. Go out there and knock them dead!!!! I'm rooting for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re:similar roles? - 2008/04/06 19:06 My first thought is try playing against type. You don't want to be type-cast! The last thing that you want is for people to say "there really is no role in this show for a character like you!

That is the joy of acting - you get to be anyone you want to - all you have to do is "go out and become them".

I hope this helps.
