How to stand out in a company? - 2008/02/19 11:19 If you didn't already know I go to an arts school,I'm in the theatre company, being the youngest member had it's definate challenges in itself but besides that i would like to kno how to stand out in a company,It seems my teacher wants me to go on playing so-so roles and never live up to what i know i can be.We are putting on a variety show,Everyone can pick songs and scenes they wish to perform, our teacher approves them.I have been dying to do a scene with emotion, namely love,it seems every suggestion i put in is immeadiately knocked down or given to another girl. She loves the Idea of me as Ado Annie form Oklahoma, but won't let me do 'all 'er nothin',She finally approved me as Johanna for Sweeney Todd, but won't let me do 'Kiss me'.She prefers me to do solos with scenes with lighthearted feelings.Everytime I suggest something she basically ignores me.Am I doing something wrong? Can anyone come uup with a good scene I could do that isn't so...easy?Or A character she could approve of that I would enjoy?I think she thinks of me as another face in the crowd,I've been trying to prove myself to her from day one,HELP! Re:How to stand out in a company? - 2008/02/19 15:27 A great scene is one from Brighton Beach Memoirs, between Nora and her mother, I cry everytime I read it... and I've read it a lot. It is definitely not an easy scene, but I don't think it's so out there that she would think it was out of your range.

I know how you feel, though. Sometimes, I'm sure I'll never get out of ensemble. That's why I go elsewhere after a few shows. (Though obviously ,with your school, that's kinda impossible.)
Auditioning for: Brigadoon, theatre season, American Music Theatre, Into the Woods, Sound of Music, and AMDA.

Re:How to stand out in a company? - 2008/02/19 16:16 Actually,I like brighton beach alot, but I was thinking something musical. The company is small, like 12 people and about 5 are graduating and i have two more years. She'd much rather give me a bad part and then cast me as the understudy when she realizes i could do it better.I did once in fame and twice for some school assemblies. Re:How to stand out in a company? - 2008/02/25 23:34 If you are the youngest one, I think you are doing pretty good! It might be good when the show is over at the end of the season or year to sit and have a friendly talk with your teacher. In the mean time, do as she asks. Being the youngest, you may not yet have a good eye as to your type or maturity. Or, perhaps she feels you need a little more experience before you work up to more challenging things. She probably feels that giving you something that an older student would do is not yet the right thing for you. You don't want the older students to be jealous and perhaps she doesn't want the parents of the older students on her back. It is important to have something to work up to. Watch and learn from more experienced people.

In the mean time work hard to make your roles the best you can. When I was a freshman in H.S., I got cast in a show and a number of seniors didn't get in. There were some who thought that the seniors should have gotten a chance instead of me. You wouldn't be at the school you are in if folks didn't feel you deserved to be there. You've got talent. Work and earn your way to better parts. As you grow older and wiser, you might be glad that your teacher helped you to grow, but maybe protected you from doing something you weren't ready to do yet. Respect her wisdom. Stay on good, friendly terms with her. Don't go around to your friends saying things like "I should have gotten to do that instead of her". That won't help you. If you become a person your teacher doesn't like, it will keep her from wanting to cast you.

It pays to be good, generous, giving, helpful, respectful, thankful for roles you do get, a good student, and in good with all your teachers. Be a rare actor who doesn't ever have anything bad to say about someone else's performance. Always have something positive to say about everyone. Don't gossip, it's evil and makes you ugly. Be nice to others who gossip about you. If you are all these things, plus work hard at your craft, you will be a success in everything you do. Even if it turns out that you decide to do something else with your life when you are an adult. You will truly prove yourself mature and ready to do the kind of acting material you long to do. You will also discover an inner wisdom that many never discover. Your journey in life will be smoother.

Re:How to stand out in a company? - 2008/02/28 18:41 I mean,I have the experience, that's why i'm always understudying. My teacher even told my mother that I was probably the most experienced in the class and that's why I'm always understudy. She's now cut out my Johanna peice,I have one peice that would be the one I'm not to happy about anyway.(Ado Annie,I CAN'T STAND HER)ol.I'll work it out!
